Dust Masks?

Dust Masks?
Does anyone wear a mask for dust / smog / smoke? Is it washable? How well does it filter? Can you suggest a brand? ...or material to make one?
The last few weeks we've been breathing in large amounts of smoke from morning cooking fires and regular road dust. My nose is constantly caked with dirt.
I purchased two 3M surgery masks at a local pharmacy but they do not last long and are not washable.
Ideas?

This is probably the best one for the money, it uses a hepa filter.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I never wore one, but I did see one person once wearing one of those surgical masks. When I use to live in the Mojave Desert area of California there were times when the wind picked up I wish I was wearing one! For some folks living in Bakersfield California there is a spore in the ground that the wind stirs up and can infect some people with what is known as Valley Fever, and I knew people that got Valley Fever and wished they wore a surgical mask! But ultimately no one wears any protection because of the geek look factor.
