Los Angeles to San Diego

I got 4 or 5 friends to ride together every sunday morning.
We heard some riders made a trip from Los Angeles or Orange
County to San Diego and return by train next day. Regretfully, Nobody in our group has that experience. We are
supposed to leave L.A or O.C early saturday monrning and return
sunday by train. Is there anybody to advise me?
Bike Route, Milelage, Time, Train Schedule etc.
Good Ride!

This sounds like a great trip. I used to live in SD, but have no good info for you. This will be about a century one way? Be sure you can take your bike on the train.

I think it's The Amtrak Century you are seeking.
I hope to do this someday (can't do the group ride
b/c in September, school's in)

I would follow the route as given from the Adventure Cycling map as to routing. Not sure about where in LA you are traveling from..If central LA, most would follow up the LA River bike path from Long Beach north.. Don't think there is another way without awful traffic.
I understand when using LA bike path adjacent the LA river, best to do it in a large group. As to trains, most would use AMTRAK. Could use Coaster and Metrolink. They accept bikes , would be cheaper but changing trains is sort of inconvenient. AMTRAK has great bike service if you use the newer trains called 'Surfliner.' The AMTRAK web site is easy to use as to scheduling. Metrolink does not run on Sunday.
The older trains have not bike hooks and bikes must be stored in the baggage compartment. In the newer trains you sit adjacent your bikes. A nice set up.
You probably know the bike path through Camp Pendleton in now closed to cyclists. Have to ride the 15 some miles on Interstate 5.
I have biked much of this route. Pretty nice. Bike lanes pretty nice. Does get pretty busy when you get north of Laguna Beach.
Suspect on the bike path it is something like 125 miles.?

LA to SD

I have a route from Amtrak Union Statio to San Diego Amtrak station. I rode the route on Xmas day. Around 120 miles plus 15 more once I got to San Diego to get to my friends house.

We leave the Amtrak Station via Ceasar Chavez (RT) 1 BLK to Vignes (RT) 1 BLK to Ramirez (LT ) Ramirez whips around and becomes Center street continue South veer RT at end of the Architecture school and veer left onto Santa Fe continue South to Mateo veer (RT) to Mateo ((LT) to 6th Street (LT) and over the bridge and into the land of Lopez. 6th Street becomes Whittier blvd. Roll on Whittier for about 15 miles to Parsons blvd. CONTINUE on Whittier across to bridge to the East side of the aqua duct and (RT) onto the Bike Path. Continue Southward on the bike path about 21 miles to the PCH exit. Watch the traffic and turn left. There are all sorts of stores and quick stops to refill your water bottles. Starbucks-6321 E. PCH. Coffee Bean-6471 E. Continue on PCH. E. PCH Southward about (33 miles). It splits off to the right becomes Del Prado right after Green Lantern St. and rejoins PCH. PCH becomes N. El Camino Real. Turn right on W Avenida Valencia (Just before the 5 fwy) 1 Blk then left on Avenida Del Presidente (LT). Left at Cristinanos road the bike trail starts (RT). Stay to the right after you go through the fence. Follow the Bike path to State Beach entrance and roll through the parking lot which is actually Old PCH. Follow Old PCH under the 5 fwy and to the end. Turn Right at Las Pulgas Rd left onto the 5 fwy S. Roll into the rest stop then back onto the Fwy. Exit at Harbor Dr. Right on Harbor Dr to Harbor Dr S (veer left) to Pacific Left across Channel to Surfrider Left to PCH (RT) to continue Southward on S Coast Hwy -becomes N. Hill St. becomes S. Coast Hwy becomes Carlsbad becomes Coast Hwy 101 becomes Camino Del Mar becomes N Torrey pines Rd. Bit of a climb to the top of N. Torrey Pines Rd. N. Torrey Pines Rd takes a right at the top it you go to Genesee you’ve gone too far! Follow N. Torrey Pines Rd to Gillman Rd (RT) to end at fwy. Turn Right onto the Rose Canyon Bike trail until the end. Cross Balboa turn left then right onto Morena for about 4 miles (it bends to the left about mile three) to Taylor st. (RT) to Pacific Highway left to Broadway left to Kettner left to Amtrak station. Get on get back.

It's the Amtrak Century. I've done it a few times. It leaves from the Irvine Transportation Center.
It's about a 100 mile ride. The bikes are trucked back to Irvine. You hit the coast in San Juan Capistrano which is well south of Laguna Beach.
I didn't know Camp Pendleton was closed to cyclists. Must be the war.
While riding the century a group of us was pulled over for not riding single file. We stood there getting chewed out by an MP. It was pretty silly.

AFAIK, Camp Pendleton is open to bicyclists. It's a nice ride. I did a L.A. to S.D. overnighter few months ago and didn't have a problem. (The base was closed immediately after 9/11 but has been re-opened for a while.) I would try to be courteous and follow their rules, since they can close the road at their option.:

Base access for cyclists

Limited civilian bicycle traffic has resumed through Camp Pendleton, providing access to bicyclists through the Main Gate to points north. Bicyclists seeking access must wear helmets and carry a valid driver’s license or state-issued I.D. Access will be permitted on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cyclists must ride single file.

For more access information please contact the Provost Marshal Office Desk Sergeant at 760-725-5106.

https://www.pendleton.usmc.mil/scout/...vise/cycle.asp

FWIW, If anyone is going on their own and taking the Amtrak Surfliner back to L.A., try to arrive at the station early. There are a limited amount of bike racks. On summer weekends or during special events, you might have a problem finding space.
