Last minute help (Portland)

We leave for Portland Saturday evening and arrive 11:16 PM. We have a reservation at the Portland Airport Travelodge (3828 Ne 82nd Avenue). Since our car is not available until in the morning we wonder about getting to the hotel from the airport either on or with our bikes. Can anyone comment on how the hotel would be to get to by bike? Or will there be a shuttle available that time of night? There are three of us so there are three airline sized boxes.

Sorry for the duplicate post if you also read the crazy guy forums.

Call your hotel and ask about shuttle service. Many airport hotels have them, and they should be used to guests with large/unweildy luggage

That's pretty close on bike: 2-3 miles tops. Exit the airport and head East on Airport Way. Take a Right on 82nd, which goes under Hwy 30. It'll merge into 82nd (I know it's weird), so take a left onto 82nd. Your hotel is 1.5 blocks past Sandy blvd with cuts across 82nd at a strange angle and has the Cameo Hotel on the corner. Easy ride.

However, the time of night is problematic. If you get in at 11:16, you won't get your bike assembled and head out of the airport for 1.5-2 hours. Folks drive pretty fast on 82nd and I'd be concerned about drunk drivers (there are lots of bars and strip clubs in the area). For other options: pretend you're staying at the Quality Inn Portland Airport--they have a free shuttle and are located at 82nd and Sandy. You could drag your boxes from there. Take a cab--there are some vans at the airport that should fit your bike boxes. It'll be a reasonable fare from the airport to the hotel.

Isn't that a bad neighborhood around that time of night too?

It's a short trip from the airport and would probably be safe, but it's not where I'd like to ride at 1am! There will definitely be a "jackass factor" to watch out for--drunk people who think it's funny to mess with cyclists. $10 for a cab would be a better way to start a tour IMHO.

I think most of the crap is south of the Sandy over the hill. North of Sandy I do not recall anything that would attract the idiots. I also think the road has been widened and is well lit. My memory could be faulty cause it has been awhile.
