Thanks - I'm waiting on www.mec.ca to get in some Planet Bike Cascadia ATB fenders which I'll throw on the Sherpa. If they still don't have them in stock by the end of March I'll just order them direct from Planet Bike.

Vik, those tyres look chunkus - how wide are they, and how wide will the frame and fork take?

Congrats Eric, looks like a great bike.

Very nice! I'm officially jealous!... Did the frame come that colour or did you get it repainted? Looks like a great bike for your trip.

BTW - since you work at the source I was wondering can you order a EXP or EXXP with the same flat black powder coat as the Sherpa or will Thorn only sell them in the colours listed in the brochures?

Congrats Eric, looks like a great bike.
The tires on there are 1.75" Marathon XRs. For my tour this summer I'll be putting on 2.0" XRs and fenders...there may even be room for 2.2" XRs and fenders.

Kyle, no one likes a show off. Kidding. That's a great bike, man. I, too, am jealous. Is that an extra flat handlebar or a weapon to whack dogs and annoying children? And what front rack are you using?

Damn, DA—you don't fool around when you pack. Every bike I've seen of yours has been loaded to the gills. I'm curious about the extra handlebar as well.

"Looks like a pump strapped on top of the top tube." Look at the down tube.

The eXp can be painted however you want, it's a bespoke bike.

As for the handlebar, yep, it's a spare. I'm not sure which one to use, so I'm carrying both until I decide. And there's a pump strapped to the top tube as well.

PS: As of Tuesday, I don't work at Thorn anymore!

It's even more loaded than usual, as I'm 'moving house' at the moment...check out the blog in my sig.

For all you bike nuts:

Steel frame with S+S couplings
Disc-compatible Rohloff (ex-box)
Rigida Andra 30 rims (awesome) w/DT Swiss spokes
Schwalbe Xarathon XR 26 X 2.25 (With 2 Conti travelcontacts as spare)
Shimano LX V-Brakes (XT are over the top)
Flat bar with bar ends OR MTB riser bar (on down tube
Tubus Logo rear rack
Jannd Extreme front rack (wonderful)
Very old Brooks B66
Mudguards - will ditch these when I get past Turkey.

Bored yet?

be totally honest here duke archer how does the bike handle with that load ,like how many miles would you cover in a day and what speed would you average ,you must be nackered at the end of the day pushing that load. fair play to you i can see from your photo your young enough you must be also super strong.
the bike look's great never seen a white thorn before.

I think you forgot something, DukeArcher:

I'm afraid to ask what you're lugging around. Did you consider a trailer?

It's hard yakka with the load I have at the moment, before I head off toward China I'll ditch a lot of it to get it down to around 40 kilos or so. It's a lot heavier than that at the moment.

As for the handling, it's rock solid. I'd do about 60 miles average a day, I'm in no hurry. Trailers? I'm not a fan. The bike is capable as-is.

I had the bike resprayed as I kind of had a 'falling out' with the manager of Thorn...

I like to be comfortable at camp at the end of the day - plus I take after the Japanese, awesome load carriers! Check these out and weep!

Little by little. Piece by piecce. I should have the drivertrain done this evening, but my plan on using an older pair of cantis fell through so I'm having to wait on them. Anyway, a few pics.

Can I suggest that if you are going to use these road brake levers with cantilevers, which is always a compromise, then try the new Tektro CR520 cantis which are a vast improvement on anything I've tried.
They are a copy of the old Mafac Cyclo-cross cantis but have been improved by a toeing-in and tensioning facility. You can have a look here.

When I had my Raven I found that the original riser bars did not allow me to move the brakes and changer in-board enough to shorten the bars. I changed them to straights and these were fine with padded bar-ends in a position similar to yours.
