Racks and Panniers, Xtracycles, Added Weights?
Does anyone know how an Xtracycle setup compares with front and rear racks and panniers, in terms of weight?
(Or maybe there is some numbers-oriented person, or someone who enjoys calculations and specific weight comparisons? Or maybe there is someone who has weighed a bike, before and after an Xtracycle conversion?)

There will be some variations -- there are lightweight racks, average-weight racks, and heavier racks; and the same is true for panniers.
The Xtracycle's added weight includes everything in "The FreeRadical Hitchless Bicycle Trailer Kit . . . [which] comes with the FreeRadical base frame, two FreeLoaders, V-Racks, a SnapDeck, cables, chain, and all the small parts you will need to convert your bike into an S.U.B."

My guess is that the Xtracycle will come in ~4lbs heaver then panniers and panniers have another advantage in terms of weight, they hold less so you have to pack light.
FWIW My approach would be to first determine how much your gear weighs, if 40lbs go with panniers if 60+lbs go with the Xtracycle, something in-between, go with "other uses" to make your determination. I tour with my kids so me being the family packhorse is a must and I love the Xtracycle especially on one tour where we had to pack our own water.

An 18" Big Dummy with 26X2.1 Kendas, disc brakes, kick stand, fenders, B17, Freeloaders, V-racks and Snap Deck weighed in at 43lbs.
