I have a '96 Trek 520 and after the tweaks it's great. Not sure about the forementioned quality issues of later years.
BUT I did see a Bruce Gordon on tour last year in Eastern Colorado and I'm saving for one now. Really a sweet ride! Price is pretty comparable to a tricked out 520, with way nicer racks. No goofing around making it like I would want it. BANG, it's right when delivered. (Kinda takes some of the tinkering out of it for some)

Don't let my wife know as she thinks it's OK to have only 6 bikes.
