Two Guys, One Way, One Tour, SAVANNAH GA, To NYC

hello everybody, just thought id toss this little thread together to centralize all my questions and information on my upcoming trip

we plan to head out august third, in the dead center of the summer heat unfortunately, and our goal is to make it there before the end of the month

anybody think this is unreasonable?

we have never toured before, and the longest either of us have done is 50 in one day, we are both 21 years old, and work as pedicab drivers here in Savannah

im really really excited and the real preparations are just starting to take place

im riding a 93 gt passage, and hes riding a trek multi track 1000 from sometime in the early 2000s

we both plan to take trailers, and share the weight of gear between us

excited to hear from others on our plans!

Ian-

what would be your recommendations as far as these saddles are concerned for touring, should i get a sprung b17? that is what i was considering most

This is crazy. I'm taking the EXACT SAME tour starting on the 23rd. Savannah to NYC, we are shooting for 26 days of riding. We (myself and a friend) are flying into Savannah on next Monday, staying two nights in town, then taking off. We are following the route in "Bicycling the Atlantic Coast", with a few minor changes. When I saw this topic title, I thought m tour buddy finally got on bikeforums. Anyway, we should keep in touch, because I'm sure I can provide you with some information, as our tour should be complete about a week or so before you leave. It is essentially the same scenario, although we are riding Surly LHT's, with racks and panniers, instead of trailers. First time loaded touring. Anyway, best of luck, and shoot me a message with your e-mail address. Maybe grab a beer in Savannah?

Sounds like an adventure. I live in Atlanta and have toured around the south a few times. You will have a great time, read as much as you can about touring, there is a lot of great information on this forum. I have a brooks b-17, to break it in I put it on my bike and rode. I compare brooks seats to having a puppy, a puppy is a pain at first but you still love it, then it stops pooping in your shoes and it becomes perfect.

I think you can do it.

Biggest tip I can give you is, it will be a bit tough to actually ride your bike into Manhattan. It's very difficult to cross the Hackensack River, bikes are not legal to ride on most of the crossings. You will either have to take the PATH in Newark, or ride way up north and cross the GWB.
