Breach on C & O Canal Towpath

Since a number of posters are planning on riding this trail, here's some news on it:

It may be quite a while until the National Park Service fixes the towpath here. Fortunately, there's a relatively easy road detour already in place.

Hanna Leaves the C&O Canal with a Towpath Breech and Downed Trees

Potomac, MD A breech in the C&O Canal towpath and numerous downed trees are Tropical

Storm Hanna’s legacy at C&O Canal National Historical Park.

A 20 foot stretch of the towpath just upstream of Anglers collapsed during the storm.. “The

towpath between Anglers and Lock 15 above Widewater is impassable,” C&O Canal Superintendent

Kevin Brandt said today. “Visitors in this area should use the Berma Road to get around the break.”

Thanks - I ride out there now and then and wasn't aware that Hanna damaged it. I'm surprised, I didn't think the weather was severe enough to cause such a breech.

This is a non-issue. For years, this simple detour at this part of the canal was used. You barely have to go out of your way at all. The detour is level, in the forest, and quite pretty.

Seems to me that the C&O gets breached in the lower sections every couple of years. Nothing really new.
