Unsure of Front Derailleur for LHT build
Hi all,
I need one last part for my green LHT, the front derailleur, but I am not sure what's compatible or worth the price.
Crankset - Shimano Ultegra Triple 6503 52/42/30
Shifters - Shimano BS77 Bar Ends
Rear Derailleur - Shimano RD-M770 XT Long Cage
I was thinking about just shelling out for the Ultegra Triple FD-6503, but I've only been able to find them on ebay, and they go for $40-50, which I don't really care about. No online stores seem to have them though. I have found the 6603 model for sale, but would that work with my 9sp setup?
Or should I just get something cheaper? After all, I'm not really concerned about weight.
Thanks in advance

Dirtyart, Just a thought, but if you're using this bike for loaded touring you might want to think about lower gearing. Alot of these are set up with intermediate cranksets 48/36/26, or atb 44/32/22. Because if you later decide to lower the inner ring you won't be able to make much of a change with a 52 outer. And going up steep hills the 18-20 inch low is nice.

Here's your derailer

It's only $20 new! There's really nothing wrong with a new FD, but the springs will be worn. New is better. And this one will work well with your drivetrain.

These forum folk know their stuff. Get a cheapo front derailleur, like the one suggested by 'tacomee'. And get smaller chainrings, such as 26-x-46 (the middle one one depends on your rear cluster). Tall gears won't get used much on a tour, but if you're in hilly country, the low ones will.

If you're committed to a triple, get the Tiagra, a brand new one, and deal with the somewhat higher cost. You just got a new, fairly pricey but not insanely expensive bike, which hopefully will last for years and give you a lot of joy, so you may as well spend a bit more and get a FD that doesn't piss you off every time the terrain changes.
Have you considered a compact double instead of a triple in front? I have a triple on my own LHT, and it works reasonably well, but I sometimes wonder if shifting wouldn't be a lot simpler with two chain rings instead of three....

The new 105 Triple FD is fine with your spec. It's wider than the previous but is also rigid.
