Keep the news coming. I don't care about his politics.
He is bike rider.

10 Wheels 12-14-08 04:51 PM

What bike is he riding?
What tire sizes?
Does he have a bike shop supporting him?

Hey guys!

My name is Luke and I'm one of Ryan's old friends. Thanks for all the interest you have shown in his journey! Let me be clear: I am not authorized to speak on his behalf or anything he is doing. I haven't cleared anything I will say with him. I am not affiliated in any way (other than moral support from afar) with Ryan's adventure.

That being said, I just wanted to give you some updates I know of from being connected to Ryan on FaceBook, where he posts infrequent messages as to where he is. Since there is a lot of interest about that, I figured I'd fill you in:

On Dec. 5th, Ryan posted a message saying he was camping in Alpine, CA. Alpine is about 30 miles east outside San Diego, via Google Maps.

Just yesterday (12/13 at 8PM), Ryan posted that he had arrived in Las Cruces, NM, after riding 200 miles in 2 days. He seemed pretty happy about it!

It seems to me like he will soon be entering Texas, via El Paso.

Even though Ryan has no idea that I am on here (and I haven't even talked to him since just before he started), let me just tell you guys that Ryan is really one of the most down to earth, nice, friendly persons I have ever met, and I consider him to be one of my best friends. I know that he has rubbed some people on here the wrong way, and to be quite frank, I can see why. However, please give him a chance and continue to support his biking adventures, whether or not you agree with his methods or politics.

I'll be trying to keep updating you with any information that I get. Again, thank you for the interest in his trip and his safety - I know that he appreciates it. Have a great afternoon! :)

Thanks for the update. It is good to hear he is doing good mileage. Keep us posted if you here more.

He has certainly caught folks interest here. I think most of us wish him well.

His Mileage:
Dec 5th Alpine , CA to Dec 13th Las Cruces, MN
Google = Walking route 694 miles = 99.1 mile per day
Google = Car route 808 miles= 115.4 miles per day.

That is amazing. If he keeps up that pace, he will be in D.C. way ahead of time.
He should be in Austin in less than a week. I will have to call him.

He is bike rider.

And he's a Texan now. He's in El Paso. And he has a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on his bike. :)

Ryan's plan is to take Rt. 10 to Austin. If he has the strong tailwinds he's had today, he expect to be in Austin by Friday. He'd like to ride with any West or Central Texas riders who are around in the next few days. Call him.

The man himself will be online this evening, so perhaps he'll give you more of an update.

Joshua1234 12-14-08 08:58 PM

I would love to ride for a bit in Austin with him. He is probably much to fast for me though.

10 Wheels 12-14-08 09:00 PM

He is Flying... 102 miles per day.

You could stay with him a while.
Buy him a hamburger or something.

Joshua1234 12-14-08 09:05 PM

veggie burger?:)

I heard an old Tom Petty song today and thought the lyrics really fit Ryan's tour. Heck it probably fits for a lot of us. I think it might fit him a little better if you consider is screen name.

Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
The town lit up the world got still

Im learning to fly but I aint got wings
Comin down is the hardest thing

Well the good old days may not return
And the rocks might melt, and the sea may burn

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Comin down is the hardest thing

Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I started out for God knows where
But I guess I'll know when I get there

I'm learning to fly around the clouds
But what goes up must come down

I'm learning to fly but I aint got wings
Comin down is the hardest thing
I'm learning to fly around the clouds
But what goes up must come down

I'm learning to fly
I'm learning to fly

And I should have known the tenor's first solo would bring Ryan to mind:

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way...., make straight in the desert a highway....Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.
Issiah 40:3-4

Old Issiah must have been thinking of a bike tour. Or perhaps not.:)

During the prayers after the performance I said one for Ryan. I'm sure it was heard; what He has in mind is another matter.

How would I go about meeting up with him?

neilfein 12-14-08 10:57 PM

You can always call his cell; there's a mention earlier in this thread that the number is on Ryan's site.

Call me: 503.888.1987, or email flyinryan08@gmail.com if you prefer.

Tentative W. Texas route is on the I-10 until I get to Austin. I'd appreciate any info anyone may have about frontage roads, legality in TX (in AZ and NM its legal to ride on the interstate). I' straying from the adventure cycling assoc's maps in these parts, because Del Rio is so far south.

If you know anyone in or around these towns please let me know:

Mon: Van Horn
Tues: Fort Stockton
Wed: Ozona
Thurs: Harper/Kerville/Fredericksburg
Fri/Sat: Austin

As long as I make it to Austin before Sunday I'm planning on resting a day or two and meeting up with the cycling community there. Does anyone know the organizers of Critical Mass in the Austin Area? I'd really like to get a big turnout there, especially after all the good things I've heard.

Look forward to hearing from you, i gotta get to sleep, got a big day tomorrow.

BengeBoy 12-15-08 12:54 AM

According to this link, it's legal to ride on the Interstate (shoulder) in Texas as long as there is no alternate (meaning, you can't do it in an urban area):

http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?...oc_id=2616&v=v

I'll update if I get other info...

Also, it looks to me like you could save about 170 miles of Interstate riding if you got *off* of I-10 where it intersects with highway 190. Then take 190 east until it hits highway 83, follow that down to Fredericksburg and on in to Austin.

It's only about 20 miles longer, and saves you two days of riding on the Interstate.

wheel 12-15-08 02:10 AM

Keep in mind a huge ass storm is bearing down on you. Which is the reason plus terrain for the tail winds.
You might want to wait for resting until this gets over the top of you.

15-30 inches of snow in Flagstaff by Tuesday night six pm. Winter storm warning.
2-4 inches of rain in PHX.

Good job on using it to gain some extra miles.

staehpj1 12-15-08 05:34 AM

It is great to hear you are doing well. I really had my doubts given the info (or lack of info) that was being passed. Keep up the good work.

I'm not sure that is the correct meaning, though I don't claim to know anything about Texas law. Years ago while touring in Colorado, there was a similar rule. There was a short stretch I rode on the I-70 shoulder (in the vicinity of Silver Plume, I believe) where it was literally impossible to drive or bike to certain towns any other way. As soon as there was some sort of frontage road, however, it was illegal to bike on the I-70 shoulder. Given that Texas doesn't have anything like the narrow mountain valleys of Colorado, if the law is interpreted the same way, there would be very few places in Texas that you could not reach by something other than an interstate highway. Anyway, riding on interstate shoulders is not fun.

10 Wheels, your map as well as your averages are including the presumably hundreds of miles Ryan traveled in a car to get to Phoenix. Even though MI007 conveniently omitted that, Ryan, to his credit, said that he went to Phoenix by car. Where he got in the car, however, appears to be a state secret.:)

neilfein 12-15-08 07:40 AM

How is 290 from Fredericksburg tp Austin? Looks like it'd be pretty direct, and most but not all of it has a decent shoulder.

It means your mileage averages are completely bogus and convey no useful information, unless you're deliberately trying to mislead.
