The facts are that Ryan did clearly say he took a car. No one is inferring that, he said it quite clearly on the page you quoted from.

He also commented on wanting to do this again someday when he has the time to enjoy the experience without a deadline.
It sounds like he has the right attitude even if he did come off poorly in some ways here and on his page. I kind of expected as much. I hope he has a great trip and does go back and do it again or maybe ride the TA or NT when he has more time. It really is an excellent experience especially for a young person. I wish I had done it when I was young instead of waiting until I was in my 50's.

Maybe if all goes well I will be able to ride with him or assist when he is close to DC. That would be fun, and I would like to meet him. Tell him we wish him the best.

I get over it remembering it is the ride symbol of a true classic ride/race that thousands travel from far away places to be a part of.

I'm in agreement, ironically enough, that "who cares" if he took some early support. He hasn't hidden it and I recall a ton of suggestions he do just that in order to make getting to DC possibility.

At the end of the day it takes some Cajones to attempt what he is doing, caution be damned. I think the ride will manifest itself for him if it hasn't already. Yes, he may have had other reasons for leaving, but he's pedaling like mad now. I actually envy him in his journey.

It appears Ryan got picked up at San Diego, or a bit past it.

I was just trying to figure his daily average miles so that I can meet up with him after Austin.

I ride my bike in Texas, 10,777 miles this year. I got here in a Pick Up truck in 1971.
Ryan is now in Texas, riding a bike. I don't care how he got here, but He is Now here.

and with any luck, he'll be safely out of there ASAP.

That drips of ambiguity, but let's not go there.

Unless you cut across the Panhandle there is no getting out of Texas on a bike ASAP. The stretch he is now on is going to be some of the most remote areas he will encounter. He's modestly, but probably adequatley, equipped for cold weather so long as it doesn't drop into the 20's like it is now in North Texas.

I would ask anyone who might be reasonably close to his route to consider forwarding your phone number to him in case of emergency over the next week or so. He told me this morning he wil be taking 290 when the option gets there. I hope to meet up with him Fredrickburg if possibe but it's 8 hrs round trip or so for me by car. If not I will send a care package to Austin for when he get's there.

Wow, super of you!

I'm not a Vegatarian, but here is a link to Vegatarian foods available at Trader Joe grocery stores:

http://www.traderjoes.com/Attachments/Vegetarian.pdf

If you have a chance take a look at there list for some ideas. It's likely you could pick up some type of equivalent meals/foods at a large grocery store. Some may have a natural/health foods section.

I'm sure he would appreciate anything you give him. He might enjoy some foods which he couldn't easily find on his route (Maybe some ethnic rice dinners, or "organic" granola/dried fruits cereals etc etc.)

Although heavy, "tasty-bite" meals (Ethnic Indian) are quick, shelf stable, and great with rice (a quick energy source for a cyclist). And likely a vegatarian would realy enjoy a few! I've found them at regular grocery stores on the East and West coast (Texas? not sure if readily available or not).

On the lighter weight side I recall some soy based de-hydrated meals. Sunshine something or-other(??). The vegetarian Chilli is pretty darned good. Being dry it goes a long ways as a side to powdered mashed potatoes/instant rice. Likely available in a "health food" aisle/section of a large store.

Hate to nit pick but a person who eats just fish as far as meat goes in not a vegetarian...they are pescetarians. I just don't enjoy it when people serve me fish after I tell them I'm vegan.

Noted, and now that I think of it, I actually knew that, lol. Then again, Vegan and vegetarian are not exactly the same either come to think of it.

Are you going to be going down to Austin this weekend? If my schedule doesn't work out for Friday can you deliver my care package for me if you go?

I think I will go down there this weekend. I still have not looked for his number. I kinda don't want to be a bother.

Now, it sounds like all he needs to do is to realize that there is more value in making this a journey of self-discovery and change than in showing the country something, then we can all celebrate with him.

To answer your question txvintage yes I would be more than happy to take it. Just not sure if I will be able to meet up with him. Does anyone know for sure what day he will be there?

He encouraged folks to call him, and stressed that point to me in our conversation Sunday. If you are worried about slowing his progress, call him after dark, when he will likely be off the road.

Ryan and I agreed I'd call again on Wednesday night to get an update. But there's no reason I should be the only one to call. Despite reports to the contrary, I am NOT the hall monitor. :)

See...I should never drink and post...or try and quit smoking and post. Ideally I would only post from 1 to 1:30 pm after lunch which is when I'm happiest.

His e-mail he listed a couple of pages back goes to his phone. With an e-mail he can read it and respond at night when he stops.

He's hoping to be there either Saturday or Sunday at the latest. How he progresses over the next couple of days in the weather will tell lthe tale on that. He's hoping to meet as much of teh Austin Cycling community as possible. I'm not sure he appreciates just how large that community really is, lol.
