Yeah, I saw that.

But look, I realize I totally don't get this "hate" thing, but I know I'm tired of it. Can we please stop talking about it?

Sure. It's not a nice topic. Which is why I've protested the repeated misuse of the word.

Maybe it's not such a crazy idea after all... it'd be like a 4000 mile pub crawl, but without the beer. Anyone want to join me for, say, next summer?

If I could make the same wages from Subway as I would working at the bike shop, I'd do it. (Wife, kid, bills, all that.... )

The "TM" has since been removed from the site. It also looks like the webstore has been removed. Both were there when I visited this morning.

It looks like some decisions about the ride, or at least how it's being presented to the public, are being made.

PlatyPius 12-11-08 12:12 PM

How much you wanna bet that Ryan is sitting at home on his computer reading here and playing with his site trying to get more money out of people?

m_yates 12-11-08 02:02 PM

I just got on the bikingforobama web site and noticed he posted pictures of the adventure cycling maps, including a nice close up where you can read "No part of this publication may be reproduced by any means without permission of the publisher." :)

And none of us immediately saved them to our hard drive:)

Oh please, God, lock this thread. I can't help myself. I keep going back to see how this could possibly go on for seven pages. I'm too weak to resist .... must....stop...mouse....hand...now

Touring is what he needs. What every American needs one tour. I suggested a smaller tour one that starts from his house and catches the train.

I then started getting an impression of a troll. I have commented on this. And I am still waiting for him to prove me wrong. My first real problem was he spent two days doing nothing in SD (as far as I can tell), and didn't write very much at all. It was even hard to get details from what he wrote.
On a 3 day tour 180 miles I wrote seven pages all single spaced. http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.p...8&postcount=32

He most likely won't post for a while unless he visits the library. It is very remote. But to have his web site change leads me to think he could call who ever is changing it and write something for the people who gave up their time and money.

I personally would have enjoyed or enjoy watching /reading Ryan fly across the country.
Of course BF conversation helps.

I hope he is keeping warm out on the road and not in his house.

I think by accepting public money he is open to constructive criticism only to prevent other people from doing the same thing. He needs more detailed updates that is for sure.

It's like a train wreck, you want to look away but you just can't, now where is that darn bunny with the pancake on his head.

Why lock it? It is on topic and interesting. Whatever we think of him, most of us are interested in how his ride is going and how it will turn out. In the end it will be an inspirational story, and example of how it is possible to screw up in the most spectacular fashion, or something in between. I am hoping for the first and expecting one of the other two.

CardiacKid 12-11-08 09:15 PM

Okay, we have had absolutely no information from Ryan in 3 days. Why are we still talking about this.

However it depends on whether or not he actually fakes anything. So far he's just hitched a ride to phoenix, which he admitted, so we'll see where he goes from here.

I need to get out more. Or maybe stay in and read. How on earth did you dig this story up that seems to be a parallel of Ryan's ride?

DukeArcher 12-12-08 12:03 AM

I am very dubious about Ryan's ride, is it actually happening or is a stunt? I can't help but think - stunt.

There was a book about Crowhurst. I think it was called The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst. It is a fairly interesting read. I don't think it parallels Ryan's trip all that much, but there are certainly some similarities (I hope not too many).

The lack of word from him could mean that the trip has pretty much tanked and he has either given up or is making poor enough progress that he doesn't want to report it. It might be that he is still trying to pull it together and is waiting until he has some more reasonable progress to report. It is hard to imagine that he pretty much has never said what is daily mileages are or where he stayed and when. He could pass that on to his webmaster in one quick phone call and I am sure he has a signal once in a while.

I think I originally read about it on www.damninteresting.com. Good website but not updated very often. Not sure how I remembered it. Some things just stick with you I guess.

And yes, probably doesn't have much to do with ryan.......right now... other than the sporadic communication from him. If however he suddenly pops up in texas with a "hey look how far I've cycled" blog post, then we have something.

Oh come on, it's fun. Every day or so someone who should know better will throw out the four letter word that begins with the letter "H", and the fireworks commence anew.

Playing Ryan's advocate for a moment...... I wonder if he's not having mechanical problems or gathering gear while in or around Phoenix. It still doesn't explain the radio silence though.

John Nelson 12-12-08 09:33 AM

This whole thread reads like CNN. If you don't have any news, then just keep talking and make things up.

Tom Stormcrowe 12-12-08 06:17 PM

This thread has taken a decidedly mean turn, folks. I hope Ryan makes it, and regardless of whether or not you agree with him wanting to raise funds or what is immaterial. If someone doesn't agree with his methods, ignore the threads about him. I've locked this one down as a result, so enough is enough.

Tom Stormcrowe 12-13-08 12:20 AM

And now it's reopened, after a little chance to reflect, on all sides. ;)

Good luck, Ryan.
