dawes discovery 601 Specialized tricross sport
How do
I am just after opinions/comparisons on these bikes. The bike would be used for a daily commute round trip of 20 miles and a big tour in the summer. With a budget of £500, I was looking at a second hand Specialized tricross sport or comp if I was lucky enough or a new Dawes Discovery 601 08 (which are quite hard to find at the moment).
I currently have a MTB and done a ride with a friend on a Dawes 501 Discovery, I found myself having to put a lot more effort in to maintain equal speeds, the rolling resistance between the bikes was dramatic. The 501 had much thinner tyres than my MTB with road tyres on.
I have got my heart set on either of these and would just like peoples thoughts on the 2 in comparison.

I don't have any familiarity with the Dawes bike but have ridden a tricross a few times and it's a very comfortable ride. Regarding rolling resistance I've had 26"x1.50 Scwhalbe Marathon racers on a touring bike and ridden Specialized 700x32 folding Borough tires on another touring bike, I don't find any difference in rolling resistance.

Tricross Sport
I recently sold my 2008 Gary Fisher Hi-Fi and invested in a 2006 specialized tricross sport. I am absolutely in love with it. No problems whatsoever and very comfortable. I paid 300 for it from a local bike shop. I am leaving on a solo touring trip with it from Virginia to Utah in March '09. I will keep blogs up at travelblog.com If you are interested in the performance of the bike, I am sure that I will have something to say about it while I am on the road.
Keep pedaling,
Patrick
