Who are the world's most memorable bike tourers?

I want to write a book on this. No, really....

So if you were going to write a complete history of bicycle touring and notable bike tourists, who would you put in it?

Heinz Stucke
Frank Van Rijn
Dervla Murphy
Ian Hibell
Anne Mustoe
Josie Dew

And...?

No one. Particularly if you drop authors who aren't notable for what they did... well OK writing.

Still on writers I think there is Tomas Stevens, and basically everyone else was writing for their mother.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I don't think of touring as something that the participants would be compared by how "notable" they are. I have never heard of most of the folks listed so far. I guess that may be because while I like reading and like touring, I am not too inclined to read books about touring.

Anyone care to educate me on why I would have heard of these folks?

Heinz Stucke - Heard the name, but really don't know anything much about him.
Frank Van Rijn - I have no idea.
Dervla Murphy - Again no idea.
Ian Hibell - Again I've heard the name, but that is about it.
Anne Musto - No idea.
Josie Dew - No Idea.
Barbara Savage - Author of Miles From Nowhere, right?
Bettina Selby - No idea
Bernard Magnouloux - No idea.
John Rakowski - No idea.
Lloyd Sumner - No idea.
Fred Birchmore - No Idea.
Reg Pither - No idea.
Ken Kifer - I am familiar with him because of his website.
Willie Weir - Another one I have heard of but really know nothing about.
Dennis Coello - No idea.
Colin Angus - The name is vaguely familiar.

Heinz Stucke - worth reading:

https://www.bikechina.com/heinzstucke1z.html

Ken Kifer is more famous for his lifestyle/philosophy I think, than his actual tours. That and getting killed by a drunk as he was heading in to town a few days after finishing his last tour. I don't think his journal of this tour ever got finished/posted to website.

Dervla Murphy rode a one speed bike from Ireland to India in 1965 starting in the worst European winter on record. She travelled ultra light even by modern standards. Her book, Full Tilt, is the first touring book I ever read and it was an inspiration. She has written more than ten other travel books including the Ukimwi Road [The AIDS Road] across Southern and Central Africa when she was 65 years old in the 1990's and I believe is still riding even now. Her kit list is impressive in its brevity. And she is an interesting and engaging writer with astute analysis of the countries in which she travels.

Barbara Savage toured around the world with her husband and died on a local road when hit by a garbage truck here in Santa Barbara as her book went to press. She was a beautiful, athletic and intelligent young woman who I had the pleasure of knowing here in Santa Barbara.

Bettina Selby is an intrepid English cycle tourist who traveled to Pakistan alone to ride to Nepal and Kathmandu. Her book Riding The Mountains Down describes that trip. A second book tells of her trip to Jerusalem from England following various pilgrim routes.

Lloyd Sumner in 1971 took off to ride around the world by himself. The story called The Long Ride describes that trip. A funny resourceful curious traveler.

Ian Hibell another early 1970's round the world cyclist whose story was regularly published in installments in newspapers around the world. He continued to tour these last almost forty years but was tragically killed by a drunk driver while on tour earlier this year i believe. I heard him give a lecture and slide show about his travels. A live wire funny and relentless tourer.

Bernard Magnouloux toured around the world for five years in the mid 1980's. His very detailed route he wrote up in Travels with Rosinante in 1988.

John Rakowski after extensive touring wrote in 1981 a guide to all of Europe including Easter Bloc/Soviet countries. His book Adventure Cycling in Europe was an early standard for guide books back then.

Dennis Coello was/is an early advocate of off pavement self contained mountain bike camping in the early days of mountain biking. He had regular bike magazine and newspaper columns promoting cycle touring.

“Most memorable touring authors”

Surely Tim Harvey, Alastair Humphries and Janne Corax are worth a mention.
