Shower cap over helmet...
Ok, so I bought a jacket today whose hood won't go over my helmet. So, erm, about this shower cap idea...was this someone's idea of a sick joke, or is it real? Any suggestions for a, erm, "helmet rain cover" that doesn't look too ridiculous? Photos?
Also...anyone just wear the hood under the helmet? |
You can get 15 clear shower caps at a Dollar store for $1.00.
I carry one in my rain jacket all the time. |

Action shot! This doesn't look too bad does it? Keeps my head dry, so I'm happy with the setup.

Riding in the rain is about staying dry and warm, not looks. |
My thoughts exactly...being wet is no fun on a cold, windy day, which was the case when I took my picture above.

I carry a shower cap as a Brooks seat cover in the evening and helmet cover when it rains. I store it shoved under my saddle.

Yes, so do I! This is amazing! I just posted the same thing in a saddle post:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=601296 I carry two shower caps...one for the helmet, and the other for the Brooks saddle. |

Looks good to me.
Riding in the rain is about staying dry and warm, not looks. To the OP, there is no reason you can't wear the hood under the helmet if it isn't bulky. I usually just settle for a thin pile cap if it is very cold and nothing but the helmet if it isn't, the shower cap does sound like a good idea though. I have also heard the the shower cap like elasticized bowl covers work well. I have never tried any cover. |
What is wrong with wearing the hood inside the helmet? That's what I do since the helmet itself is impervious to water.
|
it could be because it's easier to take off the shower cap when the rain's stopped - without taking off the helmet....
i was coincidentally thinking and telling my girlfriend about shower caps for cycling today - until i saw this thread! we're gonna get some cheap shower caps featuring some japanese cartoon art.... |

You can purchase a dedicated helmet cover for riding in the rain; it's what I use because I ride in the rain a lot. It cost me $20 and I just leave it on all winter. Seems cheap to me for the extra protection from rain and cold that it provides.
Under the helmet I wear either: - A baseball cap (the bill keeps rain off my face) or a cycling cap. Especially good if rain is hard and it's not that cold or - The hood of my rain jacket (good if it's wet and cold, traps heat around the head) or - Just a skullcap (good if it's cold but not raining very hard) |

Nice replies! Thinking about bengeboy's suggestion of a cycling cap under helmet to keep the rain off your face... I have worn a baseball cap in the past (got to watch out for the button on the top), but since my current helmet has a visor, I haven't needed to. It doesn't do a very good job on the rain front though.

I have one of those too. Still looks like a shower cap.. A hooded waterproof jacket works the best.. Shower caps allow rain to run down one's neck.

I have a Bell helmet cover that goes over the helmet and attached sun visor as well. My concern with wearing a hood (over or under the helmet) is that it might restrict head movement or otherwise affect your view.

Most hotel stays include a shower cap at no extra charge. Stock up! I think I'm up to quantity 3.

I had a few femtoseconds of internet fame when I made and sold these 1-up mushroom helmet covers on etsy:
http://craphound.com/images/il_fullxfull.52809630.jpg http://boingboing.net/2009/01/13/1up...m-bikehel.html I'm pretty damn lazy and haven't made any since then, so hopefully the mod police will choose not to see this as self advertisement. Just want to show that one CAN be more fashionable than a dollar store shower cap! |
