Since no replies, I'll recommend you look at crazyguyonabike. How about this diary?

You should do it. Three years ago I was planning Phoenix to Nicaragua, and changed it to Phoenix to Maine to Phoenix and finally ended up doing NYC to LA instead. I have friends who own land in Nicaragua and they continually tell me that visiting the area is a must; there's no place like it. Living is cheap, food is amazing, people are friendly. I'm currently planning to find my way down there eventually, but north I must go first.

I'm considering a trip from California to Guatemala. There's an organization in Guatemala called Mayapedal that is a frequent destination for touring cyclists. Check out CGOAB. One journal I particularly remember was called 'Bici and the Bee' These journals should have tons of info.

Have fun in Nicaragua, I did some humanitarian stuff near Jinotepe and really loved the people and land.

Bikes: which one?

Any specific info you are looking for? We are now down in Ecuador after cycling all of Central America and Mexico. It is very, very doable and a great experience! Be sure to plan lots of time for Mexico - it's a great country to explore!
