Places to stay..
Anyone have any good recommendations on places to spend the night for free on tours?
Park benches, Churches, the drunk tank, etc...
Any specific shelters I should look for?

Where will you be touring?
In the middle of the country in rural small town America my favorite spots are usually little town parks. They usually have a picnic pavilion, running water, an outhouse or a toilet, and often an electrical outlet. In some cases they have a pool and a shower.
When that fails I ask around and always find somewhere to camp. Sometimes a church yard, sometimes someone's yard, sometimes something else. Some times I even get an invite to stay inside a church or in someone's home.
In some parts of the country, the national/state parks/forests have nice cheap hiker biker sites. Oregon and California come to mind for these.

I'll be going from Buffalo, NY to Austin, TX, so right in the middle of the south.
This is awesome, thanks!

Use warmshowers.org and couchsurfing.com for when you are in cities. They won't help much out in the country, however. You will always be able to find a place, but it might take some searching in the eastern US - just ask around and people will help you out. In fact, they will be happy to help you out and many times will invite you in.
