I'd love to ride more in sandals, especially now that we're getting temperatures in the low 90's, but they don't play well with clips and straps -- my feet tend to get caught in the cages, and that can be downright dangerous!

Has anyone found a type of clip/strap setup that works with sandals and is practical for touring use, or is that a pipe dream?

Nope. Then again, I don't do clips when clipless are so nice. That said, I love my Shimano SPD sandals. They're my main riding footwear and ~7 years old and holding up well. They have just two straps, are comfortable for walking, and I've even gone swimming in them. I was on a limestone beach that hurt to walk on barefoot. Sandals are good down to ~50 in my book...if you're willing to be socks 'n sandal guy. I just wear a sock that matches the shoe--black and nobody knows the diff.

What kind of sandals are we talking about? I use Powergrips with a set of Hangten hiking Sandals. They are almost exact copies of the Keen water/hking sandals at REI.

Keen makes a biking sandal. They work great for me. I like the covered toe.

I think he is talking about sandals without cleats that can be used to walk around in. Not cycling sandals.

Correct. Everyday sandals, like the ones I have in my closet.

I'm also hoping to tour in sandals this summer. I'm thinking I might just do it on my regular platform pedals. Probably sounds crazy to some, but I figure mind over matter. The first people who toured on bikes didn't have clips or straps (or roads or gears for that matter).

This is just another vote for the Shimano sandals. They are by far my favourite touring footwear (and winter riding footwear). Combined with wool socks and rain covers (as the situation dictates) they are the best compromise for me.

Everyone, thanks for the clipless love, but I'm a loveless kinda guy. I'd really like to know if I can find a kind of clip and/or strap that will work with sandals.

There are some plastic clips for the front of the pedal with no straps. They work OK. I am now either a clip-less biker or ride BMX flats with pins. I often ride w/ Tioga Spyder D pedals. Very light and really grip the sole of your feet. I've ridden over 60 miles with them and would not hesitate riding a century and plan to use them for touring this year.

I ride year-round in Chacos (double up the socks when it gets below 20F) with some old MTB clips with "securi-clip" embossed on the rubber cages. I don't fasten them (already run enough stop signs as it is), but they're still good for some lift on hills when I think about it. These are my everyday walking sandals and everything is comfy. I've never had a scare yanking my feet out of the clips.

@Hayduke865 - Do you have more information about these, or a photo? I can't find anything like them online. Someone I met mentioned MTB clips as being helpful, but I'm not sure what those are like.
