Bikes: Mongoose IBOC Road

Boise, ID to Eugene,OR

I am planning on riding from Boise, Idaho to Eugene,Oregon. Has anyone toured this route? I am curious as to the best roads to take. I could grab a map and figure it out, but experience speaks...hopefully

We did it in reverse, but I do know the route, at least the one we rode. Our goal was to ride highway 20 from the Oregon Coast to Boston MA. That is what we did. It essentially took us from a little north of Eugene through Boise. There are some long stretches and a lot of the route is in high desert. The roads are pretty good. If you want an idea of the trip you can go to our blog site and check out the 2007 entries. Youll have to scroll down to the beginning of the trip, July. https://www.ddlivestrong.blogspot.com

Bikes: I tour on a Waterford Adventurecycle. It is a fabulous touring bike.

I, too, did it in reverse continuing on to Jackson, WY from near Portland, OR.

My route followed the ACA TransAmerica maps from Eugene to near Prairie City in Eastern Oregon. Instead of continuing up into the Idaho Panhandle, I cut off on Highway 26 into Central Idaho. Here is the route I took.

You can read my journal here.

Are you going to ride this route soon? If so, be aware that eastern Oregon will be hot in August and there are some stretches where resupply is limited.

You're not kidding. The 2002 edition of Cycle Oregon crossed the entire state, from Nyssa (not that far from Boise) to Florence vis John Day and Sisters. That was in early September and a couple of the days in easter OR were crispy critter hot.

Bikes: which one?

We did it with our sons - it's hot. As others have said, there are some long stretches in there - be prepared and pack twice the amount of water you think you'll need. We are from Boise and started our tour there and headed west! I think it might be better to go up north a bit, but the route over drinkwater and sweetwater passes is very doable - and beautiful in its own way.

It was 109 degrees when we pulled into Juntura, OR in July on the same route nancy sv just mentioned.
