Light duty tourer - for $34
I posted in the C&V section also but had to post here too. I'm having too much fun looking for touring stuff - parts/bikes, etc. Today I purchased a 1981 Trek 510 light duty touring rig for $34 from a pawn shop. I've been watching the bike sit there for 2 1/2 months and today was going to go buy it for $60 and was lucky that their bikes were "on sale" for 50% off this weekend. I left with a smile.
The bike is a real Frankenbike - all kinds of parts. I've already put a set of drop bars on it and put in a set of donor wheels. The original Rigida 700c wheels will be kept but I'm not sure if I'll need to upgrade the hubs - they're Campy. The freewheel on it was a large range 13-32 6 spd Suntour. Crankset gearing is 50-42-28. Suntour Cyclone MK II front derailleur and Shimano rear derailleur.
For now, I'm going to run it as an errand bike and put some tubular wheels on it with 13-21 gearing. When it's time to tour the long cage rear derailleur and big freehwheel will be used.
Nothing like another project bike to get me through the winter and dreaming about some camping trips with the kids next summer by bike.
A couple of photos of the bike (before drop bars) and the big freewheel.

Excellent find and the price even at $60 would have been outstanding. That is a $149.95 bike at the pawn shops around here, if they even have anything other than Magna or Next's.

Nice find. I'm a big fan of lugged steel. That bike will ride as smooth as freakin' glass!
