Another note on half step gearing:
The range on my Cascade and P20 would not have been possible up until a few years ago as the rear derailleur has to have some massive take up and capacity to deal with a 14-30 free wheel and 28/48/52 crank set up... modern SRAM and Shimano mtb dérailleurs can handle this quite well and I like the way the SRAM X series works with friction bar end shifters.
Running the 6 and 7 speed wheels with 126mm dropout spacing also means that the wheels have less dish than an 8 or 9 speed wheel... the 7 speed on the folder is a Suntour Ultra 7 which is a closely spaced 7 speed that fits in a 126mm spacing. These are no longer made but I have a shop full of Suntour cogs and parts so I can build these up and service them as needed.

Haven't seen many folding travel bikes on this forum, I have a rekindled interest in my 98 Dahon Mariner now. Will have to think about the gearing, what parts I have lying around, etc. Very fun commuter The bike schematic is just funny for those of us who have built our own rigs.

Whoa! Tansy! That is quite the load. Where was that taken? Looks like Nevada. Are you a field hydrologist or making a film or something?
I tend not to go for more than week-long tours (work) and mostly do S24Os and weekends. Here's my bike fully loaded, all I really need for a week long trip.

Gotta hand it to a lot of you, you certainly are neat for your "stuff" photos, the last time I had ny things laid out before packing, it was just plain jumbly and certainly didn't warrent a photo.

Wow! This is all great!
I had set a goal to go from New Haven, CT to Charlestown, RI next summer with all my camping gear. I was fully intending on bringing a road bike. seeing all of these is making me rethink that, and maybe a hybrid would be more appropriate.

Great pic! I've got to do this someday and maybe lay descriptions over the items - a visual check list to speak. But then again the dogs would probably be running around with my water bottles and trail snacks.

However, I have a blog over on CGOAB and thought it would make a good pic there. I have seen a few pics like this, but it was often hard to work out what they had laying around on the ground, so I thought some labels would be good.

Very nice. I'm originally from the UP (Lake Superior side), and I love that little stretch of Lake Michigan just west of the bridge. We'd always stop near there for some smoked trout and a swim on the drive South from Marquette.

Good eye. We had just crossed the bridge. We had a huge tail wind and were cruising at 18 - 20 mph most of that day...fun!! We didn't get very far west in the UP. From Petoskey we went north to Whitefish Point then headed east to the Soo locks, then looped back. It was a great tour and we can't wait to get back see the rest of the UP.

Getting ready to do the very same thing this week, then load and go for a long ride to make sure everything is where I want it again. Headed out next week for 4 days in tri-country tour; Germany, Switzerland, and Austria with a few friends.

That stretch of road is fantastic. We always stop for a swim with kids on our way back from Newberry, we have a cabin up there. Love the UP, hopefully will do a ride next year when I get back from overseas, ride from Roscommon to Newberry. Fingers crossed.

Not exactly loaded being that the bags aren't packed. Just a mock setup testing out the trek interchanges in the front and the axioms in the back.

All the changes are at the front end, where I've replaced the stock Litespeed carbon fork with a Surly LHT fork and Surly Nice Front Rack.
That's allowed me to fit Ortlieb classic front rollers, allowing me to either carry more (not the plan) or distribute my gear more evenly across the bike.
I like the Surly rack as it has a shelf on the top for trips to the patisserie
Everything else works perfectly so no need to change. Still considering a new handlebar bag, possibly an Arkel https://www.arkelpanniers.co.uk/uk/al...-bike-bag.html

I have had those same axiom rear bags for several years now and they have really held up nicely. I like the size and versatility of them for touring and commuting and weren't at all expensive. Considering Delta compact panniers for front as I have a Delta front rack, anyone here have experience with that stuff?
