yes it is a tubus tara, since my fork is straight I had to remove and place the fixing points of the horizontal bar on a different spot.

Finally left Boquete this morning. Did a 55 km cycle in the morning to the next city and heading north! Plan is to reach mid or Northern Mexico through all of Central America. Packed basic and light using an old milk crate and 20L panniers I bought online.



(Don't mind the outfit - it wasn't for cycling) Total weight, around 15 - 20 kilos (not including bike).Working on getting it lighter - This includes my backpack with clothes, a tent, camping stove, blanket, computer and lots of little extras (shampoo, tools, ect) Rode beautifully the whole time after I got used to it.

it is, though it makes me think back 20 odd years doing trip photos like this--shoot each shot visualizing the layover point, develop the film in the darkroom, when teh negs were dry make contact sheets, chose shots for extended shots, make prints for layover finals, reprint certain prints to match up the sky or ground tonality, wait for prints to dry....and then tape 5x7s or 8x10s together to make a nice montage shot.......

you know, I spent half my life in a darkroom and I dont really miss it......a little, but not that much....

no thanks...! i spent a couple of semesters in the dark room and that was enough for me. i did enjoy manipulating B/W film and the negative to print process, but not enough to want to do it for trips / personal use.
and just a few years ago I was stitching photos together and masking out sky / people / trees with Hugin...
now I just stand with my phone and spin...

I hear ya. I worked for about 25 years in commercial photography and nearly all of my personal work was in b+w, but havent shot any pretty much since going digital, not for many many years now. Here's a couple I have took some pt and shoot photos of a few years ago to show to a nephew. I developed and printed so much work stuff that doing personal work was very much more satisfying, especially printing large prints of my own stuff that I liked. All the grin and grab crap and commercial work I had to do in the darkroom was mindnumbingly boring. Paid alright but was like factory work for a good part of it. I was glad when we stopped doing press type stuff in b+w, that was the worst.

Crate broken within the first 50 km ride. Made bucket panniers for a much sturdier and more even ride.

The bike was $150 from ebay. Just finsihed day 3 of riding 70 km per day and its all good...minus the seat.

Yes. I slept with it. Should have put it into my jacket as soon as I filtered breakfast water. It likely froze within the hour. Was probably 18-20dF in camp that morning. Already replaced it to be certain. I used my backup Aqua Mira drops later that day.

This was my under 30lb build for a 2 week / 1,400 mile tour last month. Trying to setup even lighter next time

My 2011 Fuji Newest 3.0... This was taken during a Seattle to San Diego ride two years ago. In April she'll depart on a Portland to Portland ride covering 5,000 miles in 100 days (counting rest days) and 22 states.

That looks great! Would love to hear more about your bikepacking trip. I did the entire CDT in Colorado but not on a bike. PM me if you have a moment.

Had mine for two winters and I don't *think* it has frozen yet. I keep it in a certain pocket in my jacket at all times except when I'm filtering, just to be sure. But I am thinking I'll replace mine next year just to be super-duper-safe.

Someday, hopefully, there will be an ultralight filter that can process unlimited water without the freeze risk.
