Most sure-fire way I've found to get ice water: stop & ask someone who is out watering their lawn if I can fill my water bottles from their hose. They ALWAYS say, "Let me get you some cold water from inside the house!"

This never happened to me on tour but once when I was out on a day ride I was offered water and ice.

Friends and I were out on a day ride to one of our favorite little towns called Volant, PA. It was a blazing hot day and we had stopped at the crest of a hill, after a long hot climb. A lady was doing yard work and asked us if we would like some water. We thanked her and told her we had plenty of water to get to our destination. Then she offered ice. We were in her driveway in about half a second.

I think one of the many great things about touring is getting to meet people along the way. Asking for directions, water or whatever is a great reason to chat for a bit.

Bikes: Thorn Ravan Catlayst, Bill Nickson tourer, Bill Nickson Time Trial, Claud Butler Cape Wrath, Motobecame Tandem etc etc

I carry water filters and sterilizer....if there is a roadhouse a bar or houses I will ask....and if there is not I will just hold up an empty bottle to passing traffic.....which has worked several times....
