Small stuff fits in the frame bag - tools, water bladder, food, camera- because you don't want to be hitting it with your knees, but these hold a lot of stuff.
Bulkier stuff goes on the bars or in the seat bag. Or you could mix and match and try a post mounted rack & bag with light/bulky stuff and a smaller frame bag with the heavier items in. EDIT: Did some more research and this makes sense; Frame bags are generally custom made, so I guess I will just make one. I am still interested in what seat bag that is and how they mount everything to the handle bars. |
Well, just got my email from Bob Jackson and the bike is already being painted, so rackless it is.

look up Epic designs and Carousel bag works. I think there's another one out there, but the name escapes me.

Old Man Mountain racks work on bikes with no rack mounts. I've been using my oldest OMM rack for ~10yrs and it's going strong. They'll work with disc brakes and just about any odd frame feature. Worth the investment as you can move it from bike to bike as needed. Also made by a couple bike nuts in the US if that matters to you. http://www.oldmanmountain.com/Pages/...RearRacks.html |

Get a Carradice saddlebag and a handlebar bag. What kind of load are you going to be carrying? Between a big saddlebag and a big handlebar bag, you can fit a lot of stuff. Though I'm not sure how that will affect your bike's handling.
|
Yeah, I am just going to be carrying my Ultralite Backpacking gear (<15lbs with food), some tools, spare tire, extra chain, etc. I think I could do just fine with the handlebar bag and a saddlebag. So this is what I will make first and then make a frame bag for the heck of it. The frame bag sounds nice, because the load will be distributed in a better way, as far as handling goes.

fixed with carradice SQR tour, and I did add an ortlieb h-bar bag http://lh5.ggpht.com/mike.beganyi/SG...jpg?imgmax=720 carradice camper longflap, fixed, errand runner, grocery getter, kid hauler, century bike: http://littlecirclesvt.com/wp-conten...02-400x320.jpg gears - light touring / club racer - epic (revelate) bags... adding a frame bag for tools / stove / etc. http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_0j...0/IMG_9474.JPG |
Did Epic Designs change their name to Revelate Designs? I am not going to buy one, since I can easily make these bags. But the more pictures I can find the easier time I will have designing them.

Epic is Revelate, due to a certain big bike company that begins with 'S' telling them to change it up or face the lawyers...

Here's a few threads on bikepacking.net about DIY bags:

Frame bags seem like the could be handy - but remembering a few days last summer of 70+ miles with steady 20-30mph crosswinds make me worry that I would blow entirely across the state of Illinois if I was using one.
