I would agree with you on bar width, I am 5'10" and weigh 140 lbs, so thin, and I find the 44cm bars on my cross bike more comfortable than the 40cm on my old touring bike. Generally the rule of thumb is width to be the width of your shoulder blades, searches can show you pictures.
