Good news, it looks like Schwalbe is finally putting out an update to the much loved, recently discontinued Marathon XR:

that is good to hear. Reinventing the wheel/tire gets a bit tedious, I understand marketing new, newer, NEWEST! products to maintain interest but when it comes to long wearing heavy duty tires the road is the same.

funny, I can't find the Marathon Extreme, is it discontinued?

This is real good news indeed. I was hoping to find XR's next time I buy touring tires. The 700x40 or 35 looks right up my alley...

My wife and I ran Extremes in India (40's on my bike, 40f/35r on hers), and they're awesome but slower than necessary for most road-based touring in countries with reasonable pavement. Amazing in their element, but I'm not surprised if they don't sell as they're pretty, well, extreme!

+1 --> I rode an Extreme (rear tire, XR on front) on the Dalton Highway (Alaska) and it was excellent for that environment.
