I left June 1, 1976 to start my ride to Williamsburg, VA. I left from Cortland, NY, and rode 600 solo miles, including through Washington, DC, and started with Bikecentennial in Williamsburg on the evening of June 11, going east to west. We (TAEK612) started out as a group of 14, 12 of us finished. After Reedsport, OR, I rode solo again to San Francisco, CA. then a train to LA. Rode a total of 5,700 miles. Old man now, no plans to ever do even part of that again.

My bike on my Bikecentennial ride in 1976 came with, I am pretty sure, was a pletcher rear rack. It broke as i entered Wyoming from the east, and I patched it up, and could not replace it until West Yellowstone, The new one was/is a Jim Blackburn, near as I can remember after 45 years. much better rack. My bike was/is a 1975 Fuji Trans America touring bike, still have it, it was named after the cross country route. It is a rare model, cost about $350 then, a little less than custom bikes then.

Does your bike look like this? The Fuji America came out in 1975 for the first time I believe. You should post pics of your bike in the C&V forum and talk about your ride. These are neat bikes.

Catalog pic of '75 Fuji S-10S.

I've owned mine since new, but bought in late '76 SunTour Barcons and Pletscher rack went on the first month I had it, and the triple crank a few years later. So pretty much turned it into an America, but a pound or so heavier. Frame is straight gauge Hi-ten vs America's butted CrMo,
