Dawes Sahara any good?

Hi - there's not a lot of info on this bike - I wonder if someone could let me know what the spec is like for some short tours - max of a week.

clicky

If anyone knows of a bike that I could get for the same sort of money that would be better for the job, please share

I'm in the UK

Thanks for any input

looks more up to the job than the bike I toured on 40yrs ago. Make sure there's air in the tires and everything is attached to the bike well with no loose straps.

The bike is fine and will do the job.
Dawes trekking bikes all use the old fashioned threaded headset that requires 2 large wrenches to adjust. The modern replacement system (threadless headset) can be easly adjusted with a small allen key that you would be carrying anyway. Get a bike with the new system and you can reduce your touring repair kit by a few lbs of excess metal.
I have the old system and chose to do a big tour with no headset wrenches. It was a calculated risk that paid off but it could have gone wrong.

Funny thing about those pesky old style headsets...I have tens of thousands of miles on them with no trouble, and they have been around for over 100 years. As a general rule, if you adjust them properly in the shop before you leave you can get several tours done without having to worry about them along the road.

I actually prefer the old style, much easier to adjust stem height along the road if necessary.

Honestly, headsets are just about the least important bearing on a bike. All things being equal, the new system is better, but by a difference that is so small as to be completely insubstantial.

Thanks for the input - are the components all good? (for the price)

Are there any other bikes in that price bracket that are worth considering?

Quill stem wont need the headset be re adjusted, when you have to pull it out
to pack it in a box to go far from your door, and fly.

At that Price point, the bikes will be similar value.. you could buy that one,
then change things that you covet from a higher priced bike.
Or pay more up front.
