Shipping a bicycle
Hi,
I am in the middle of a tour right now, Minneapolis to Argentina (www.patablogonia.com), but I've started worrying about the end already - how I'm going to get my bike back home. I know if I was flying back then it wouldn't be too expensive to bring the bike along, but I am hoping to find alternative means (I don't like the idea of biking for over a year and returning in a coupe days), so it would be convenient if I could cheaply send the bike back.
Has anyone done this, or a similar thing? How much should I expect to pay? I paid $20 for the frame, and the components will have suffered by the end, so it will have mostly sentimental value. Any recommendations?
Thanks

Maybe you can take your bags and racks off, and sell the bike , down there,
fit the touring parts on something new when you come back..
here, local shop has a UPS account, the bikes go back in the same cartons that new bikes come out of..
people occasionally leave so much kit, it takes 2 more smaller boxes to pack it in.
so you are perhaps, looking at a couple hundred + to ship the whole bike..
got a computer, so you should be able to find cost estimates..

Every day a winding road
Any international shipping is going to be expensive. Flying with is going to be the cheapest option. You might be better to sell it but sentimental value is worth something.
You might want to check with the PO in Argentina. They might be kind of cheap. A friend sent his bike from Italy and it cost him somewhere around $100. I think some countries subsidize their PO.
