I have been looking around at some organized tours in the Northeast for this summer. One of the possibilities is the Greenway's tour from Portland to Hartford

Is anyone else doing this or does anybody have any thoughts? I am new to the touring experience, so I am not sure what to look for or what to consider.

Since it's a supported tour you won't get the "touring experience" in the sense of carrying your own gear. Organized supported events have a distinctly different feel than suelf-contained trips.

And for $500 all you get is your gear carried. You have to make your own arrangements for food and lodging pay for them out of your own pocket. That could add up quickly, especially if cheap camping not available.

The cause aside, if I were going to spend $500 bucks on an organized ride I would do something like the Bon Ton Roulet (Finger Lakes region of NY) or other event ride, where at least your fee includes camping and most/all meals. If Canda is not too far northeast, there is some scenic riding on Velo Quebec's Le Grande Tour, although the year I did it I found many of the roads to be in piss-poor shape. The food, however, was terrific. We had duck one night.

This is kind of a strange kind of tour, but I guess it really is more a fundraiser then a "bicycle tour company". You would really be performing most of the work yourself; planning lodging, finding places for meals, etc. Not sure how you get your luggage from them at the end of day, hopefully they deliver to wherever you are. If you are a noob, this doesn't sounds like a starting point unless you are more sure of your abilities.

A few years back I took my daughter on a tour of Quebec's Petit Train du Nord trail. I called the Laurentian tourism, and told them how many miles I wanted to bike each day, type of lodging, etc. They made all the reservations. While we hauled our gear, they also offered a service that transfered you gear to each B&B every day. Do a search on Crazyguyonabike.com for "Petit Train du Nord" and my writeup should show in the returned listing.

Good points, especially about the cost and service issues. I think I'll be crossing that one off the list. Thanks for the really helpful info.

For 200 more you can do the Erie Canal Ride from PTNY or the Finger Lakes from the Auburn NY YMCA.
They do almost every thing for you but ride.
