Rear Rack Suggestions

Hi Folks,

I am going on a light 3-4 day tour down the CA coast to SLO.

I have a cross road bike that has eyelids near the skewers, but it does not have the eyelids near the rear break calipers. There are no eyelids in this area at all.

This is my bike:

I ordered this from amazon and it just arrived today, and YES it needs the eyelids up on top to install.

The rack needs to be able to carry at least 30lbs. Any suggestions of a rear rack is appreciated (please include links if possible).

Thank you!

You can use P-clamps: https://www.touringcyclist.com/gear/model_16556.html

P.S. it's "eyelets", not "eyelids".

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

P-clamps will do the job well. I suggest using some pieces of rubber around the bike where you clamp them on. (Of the sort that come with mounting brackets for blinkies or lights or trip computers. You can also use a piece of a use inner tube.) Not only will that protect the finish, it'll keep the p-clamp in place better. Check it every so often to ensure it's tight; road vibrations can move these around a little.

(There are better solutions if this ends up being a fairy permanent setup. P-clamps aren't the best for removing and re-installing often.)

asiamj, You can also pick up the clamps at hardware stores. They are also called Adel clamps, usually have a rubber piece already installed, but still a good idea to use a couple of layers of painter's tape on the frame to prevent scratches.

"at least 30lbs" isn't light, You'll be much happier if you can move a few lbs onto the handle bars and drop the load down.

Bikes: Surly Ogre

Also called instrument tubing straps I use them all the time at work. Beware there are several grades of these. Industrial supply shops/places that sell piping or plumbing tend to sell the really good strong ones

If you are having issues with the straps moving or coming loose on the road, don't be afraid to retighten it and then cover everything with a lot of electrical tape. My old touring bike needed that and it was a similar type setup. Never came loose once after that

Replace your seatpost clamp with something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Electra-Seatpo.../dp/B0030IG1VQ

I think I will opt for the Tubus Stay Mounting Clamps as suggested by neilfein. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! You guys are the best!
