To begin with, you need Garmin's Communicator plug-in installed in your browser. I don't use MapMyRide, but similar mapping sites such as RideWithGPS.com and BikeRouteToaster.com can download routes to a Garmin connected to your computer if you have the Communicator plug-in installed in your browser. For Google Maps, I also installed the "GoogleMaps CueSheet" bookmarklet (from https://the-yosts.com/) in my browser. In addition to generating customizable turn-by-turn cue sheets and elevation profile maps, it can also download routes to a connected Garmin (again, provided you have the Communication plug-in installed).

Unable to get the yosts link to load a Google route onto my eTrex with IE or Chrome. Author, Kyle Yosts, admitted there had been a lot of complaints and suggested a work around that did not work either. The app works fine for him of course, and dorky too I guess. The work around suggested the eTrex would not accept the file, so maybe that is the problem.

Addenda:

Garmin's Communicator is required for direct movement of route files to their units. Just learned that Communicator will not work with IE9, the one I use. Likely will with Firefox, Chrome, and older versions of IE. When I tried a different app under Chrome, it stated the eTrex will not support the file. Got that msg with two different apps using Chrome, so eTrex is part of the problem for sure when trying to convert a Google route to a useable gps format.

You can export a gpx file from MapMyRide and other similar sites. Then use the free app Garmin Basecamp to load the data on your Garmin device. Personally I think RideWithGPS is the better site, but essentially they are all GoogleMaps based.

And Communicator not required for loading gpx files exported to Basecamp or Mapsource.

GPSBabel is very useful for transferring GPS files from your computer to your GPS device (and vice-versa), and for GPS data format conversion:
