Cycle West coast USA in winter

Everyone is different, but I was surprised to find that I didn't mind the short daylight at all when I did the Southern Tier in winter. I expected it might be a problem and it never was. I don't mind getting up in the dark and also don't mind sleeping 9 or 10 hours a night especially when riding long mileage days. It was a pleasant surprise when it turned out to mostly be a non-issue for me. That will not be the case for everyone, but it is something to consider.

Not sure how often that is the case, but I will say that I had absolutely no really cold weather in that section last winter. On my ST it was never cold again after the very few higher passes in the western part of the route. I think Emory Pass (Western New Mexico) may have been the last cold place on that trip and that was a very long ways west of Houston.

Thankyou for all your help, all advice is greatly appreciated. I think I will fly to SF and aim to cycle south, head inland to explore the desert areas and maybe finish at San Diego. Will be well prepared! Will keep you posted
