old parts on new Surly Cross Check?
HI I have some spare parts and know of a used Cross Check frame for sale. I am wondering if i can use the parts on this frame
The wheels i have are 1980's Matrix Titan 700c 7 speed freewheel.
What I would do is use these wheels with a new Shimano 14-28 freewheel and a mix of modern and 1980's parts for FD and RD and triple crankset, depending on what i scrounge up, using friction shifters.
My concern is the width of the hubs (I think 126mm) compared to the frame width (which i think is 130mm.) How will this work? Would I need spacers? Would the chain line angle work ok shifting?

I suspect you are best off not squeezing the frame, so spacers would be best. May need a longer axle to accommodate that if your wheel has quick release. Check Surly website to see what their dropout width is, if I recall correctly it is 132.5mm but you should check first. Chainline issues can probably be resolved by putting more spacers on one side than the other, I suspect more spacers on the left side. I assume you can true up a wheel, you would need that skill if you put more spacers on one side to lessen or increase dish.
If you want to run friction, go ahead but if it was me I would prefer indexed shifters. I think 8 speed non-Dura Ace indexed shifters would also work.

I just changed the rear axle in the hub , with a longer one..
the extra length is added to the left end, add a spacer, and then the dish is adjusted, to be less,
and so actually improving the balance of tension..

Yup, its 2mm difference on either side which is less than the thickness of the dropout. However, the Crosscheck is 132.5 IIRC which might mean that the axle ends wont sit in the drops until its clamped a bit.
