British Touring Couple Killed

The telegraph is reporting TwoonFourWheels.com had a tragic accident in Thailand. Sounds like a horrible ending to a spectacular journey.

Very sad news indeed! RIP.

We are actually in that part of the world now. We finished successfully our Luang Prabang to Vientiane bike tour (in Laos) yesterday. I guess the following goes with the territory (riding in developing nations), but one relevant concern is that there seems to be a large percentage of unlicensed drivers on the road driving all kinds of motorized vehicles. We were surprised to see even a very young teenage kid driving a light truck with very little sense of what he was doing (scary moment!) It's easy to get a false sense of comfort since the bicycle is still the main means of transportation for lots of people here. You'd think drivers are watching out for cyclists but that's not necessarily true due to the lack of driver's awareness. We chose to tour only in Laos as it's supposed to be safer than Thailand due to less vehicles on the roads. I'm recovering today in our hotel today from swollen tonsils and heat rash from all the dust, smog and sun exposure on the road. We understand now why so many people use face masks here. Don't get me wrong though. Laos is a BEAUTIFUL country with amazing landscapes, hospitable people and delicious food. If we were to come back, however, we would do things quite differently as far as our route.

Bikes: A few

Very sad news. What a tragic ending. I have enjoyed their blog since shortly after they began their adventure. I am glad they got to enjoy so much together and were doing something they loved. I wish their blog would remain up and working. Just now none of the links from the home page worked.

My wife and I are in Bangkok and this came across the TV. A tragic ending to a beautiful trip. The roads here can at times be quite challenging to say the least. So far for me, dogs have been the larger challenge, but sadly it takes only one car.

Please accept my sincere condolences to the family of the British couple. The local cycling groups are organizing rides to mark the tragic accident. We apologize for the pick-up driver's recklessness.

Although it is nice, you don't need to apologize. This isn't a Thai problem, it happens all over the world. I've been to your country several times. The driving isn't the worst I've seen.

Bikes: More bicycles than I can ride at one time: 2 custom made tourers, a Brompton 6-speed, and an Indian-made roadster.

yup, everywhere. In my home and native land two friends from high school were killed by a DUI unlicensed 16 yo in a head-on. They had married about a year and she was pregnant.
A friend from Brisbane was almost killed by an Emirati unlicensed driver in the UAE when she was making a LH turn and he tried to PASS her on the left. She had to be airlifted to Brisbane for treatment. She eventually went back to Bizzy and nothing happened to the unlicensed Emirati kid...

I remember seeing several lorries in England with sticker saying " Right side over taker, left side Undertaker" That should remind hasty drivers.
