Winter trail for biking and hiking?
Hi! Need some suggestions for a tour this coming mid feb-mid march. Bare with me on the background for this.
I'm in for a major knee operation on october 16. By feb/mar I'll hopefully be fit enough for short-day touring.
My friend wants to hike, so yesterday evening over a couple of beers I suggested that I could be his "sag wagon". He'll be walking 10-15 km/day so I'd have most of the day to work on a book I'm writing, set up camp, cook, maybe jaunt off and buy supplies.
So... what we need is a about 300 km of trail(s) suitable both for hiking and mountain biking.
Torres del Paine in Patagonia is one idea, 'though a bit cool at that time of year. I suggested Tasmania...
We bike-toured together around New Zealand S.Island two winters ago, so not so interested in going back there yet.
Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Imi -- If it were a little later in the year, I would suggest the C&O Canal trail running from Washington, DC, to Cumberland, MD. However, your planned time period might be a little chilly for that route, depending on the weather. The trail also can be muddy in places if the weather has been rainy. Other than the weather, however, it sounds ideal for the kind of trip you are considering. It might be very doable that time of year if the weather is not too cold and/or rainy.
The trail itself is mostly flat and unpaved, with a good surface for riding unless there's been a lot of rain. Lots of places to camp, get food and water, and many towns with hotels, restaurants, and other services along the way.

How's the Bob Jackson working out for you? We communicated when you were considering ordering the bike. Mine is still going strong, and I'm trying to plan a tour on it during October.
