American Discovery Trail

Anyone done it?
Thoughts, feelings, advice?

Trying to plan what I will do next year. Odds are I will have at least two weeks I could spend on the bicycle, but it could be as long as a month. I know I can not do it all, but....

The Discovery Trail is bifurcated at Illinois traveling thru both the northern and southern part of the state. I've done both and both are very different. The northern section is mostly off road using old canal trails and rail to trails. The southern leg is more scenic IMO but less flat. Both will probably take a good 3 days to cross.

I considered it, but decided that there were probably better routes to ride. I have since ridden the Trans America, the Pacific Coast, the Southern Tier, and a number of other longish rides and think I probably chose well. That said, I still think about trying the ADT some time. If you ride it let us know how it went.

In another thread you say that you are looking for a supported tour and that you don't like to ride on roads. On its home page, the ADT claims to be a "non-motorized recreational trail," but if you look at the state-by-state descriptions, that's simply not true. In fact, I would bet the majority of the miles are on road.

To be correct, I am trying to decide what I want to do on next years vacation. I haven't decided what to do (full-supported, unsupported, something in-between).

I looked at some of the trail close to me and a lot of it is road. If I was just looking to ride short stretches of road between trails, that would be good. But this looks more like mostly roads with a few trails to break up the road. And not even beautiful road.
