The cages have many sharp protrusions, which provide grip when using non-clip shoes. Those same protrusions seem to come into contact with my shins quite regularly when walking the bike of moving it around.

I know it is operator error, but I'm opting for pedals with less sharp edges. Having said that, my wife uses the same pedals, Shimano 324's, and does not have that problem

That is the usual state of my shins after 2-3 weeks into a tour.

All those little "shin getters"
Doug, I had been meaning to crack a joke about those shins when you showed this photo before, but never came up with a good enough one...now I know why you had those scrapes.
I agree with you, my wifes bike has those one sided pedals and I have hit my shins with the edges while moving her bike around. I have used regular round edged shimanos for about 20 years, and while I can see the advantage of the one sided ones for being able to use any shoe easier, I do like the no-fuss clip in on either side as I commute so much, and then of course how they are more streamlined for moving the bike around, or even when putting a bike into the back of a car (I often put a bike into the rear seat area of my car, take off front wheel only and bike fit into fairly easily into that space even with the pedals on-helped by the smooth edges of the 520s and my still alive 20 yr old shimano spds.)

ps, those are nasty scrapes, the type that elicit long shoreman language I reckon, shin scrapes are the worst.

Bikes: Built up DT, 2007 Fuji tourer (donor bike, RIP), 1995 1220 Trek

I use keen sandals and Crank Bros. candies.

Comfortable on and off the bike and only click a little when walking.

With wool socks I can go from mid 50's to 100+ degrees.

And they leave "tiger stripes" on my feet from the sun!
