Anyone have a Co-Motion Pangea, particularly a 58cm model? This bike has moved to the top of my "want" list and the only really good photos I can find are of a much bigger model. I would like to see what my size Pangea looks like.

I have two, but they are smaller. My wife's is a 48cm and mine is a 52cm, so a bit smaller than what you are looking for. But if you want a pic of the 52, let me know. Ours have V-brakes and not discs and is a somewhat older model (but still basically the same as they are now).

The extensive review is what got me interested in the Pangea but I remember him saying that was the largest size Co-Motion makes.

briwasson, thanks for the offer! Yours are probably too small to give a good sense of what a 58 would look like. How do you and your wife like your Pangeas? I'm not a tourer but I'm extremely heavy (400 lbs, right now) so i'm hoping that it would still be pleasant for me as an unloaded bike. I have a lot of issues with ghost shifting and the huge chainstays on the Pangea should help. Plus, I love the really low bottom bracket they build into the Pangea.

As they are a small shop, in Oregon,USA .. (relative to the huge TW ones Giant/Merida).. and, so if an off the peg size is not quite right

Ask about a custom change .. thicker wall tube and so forth.. call on the phone ..

I can't imagine a bike frame being much more robust than the Pangea. It's basically the same build as the Americano, and draws a lot from their tandems. The down tube is huge and is the same size as the down tube on my Co-Motion tandem. It also has stronger tubes all around. I would think it would be fine for a heavier rider, as the 26" wheels are also stronger than most. Give Co-Motion a call and talk to them about it. They are very good to deal with and would be the best to offer opinions on this.

We actually just got our Pangeas a month ago as used bikes. So far I'm really liking it a lot. Just had it out yesterday as a matter of fact. Comparing it with my Co-Motion Nor'wester (700c), it's definitely stiffer and more "solid." I'm ~220#, so not a lightweight guy either.

I'm in Oklahoma. My wife and I were at the grocery store about a month ago and I saw a car with a tandem on a rack. Being interested in each and every bike I see, I made sure to get a good look and it was a Co-Motion tandem! I really wanted to talk to them to see if they had bought it thru Co-Motion or used but didn't get a chance.

I'm still a long way out from being in a position to purchase a Pangea but if things work out so that I'm heading in that direction, I'll definately be talking to them. I'm also interested in R&E's UTB Journey, which is very similar to the Pangea.

How are you liking the Pangea 26" wheels vs the Nor'wester 700c?

Different thing altogether. My Nor'wester currently has 700x28s Conti Gatorskin tires on it, vs the 26x1.25" Schwalbe tires on the Pangea (or similar to a 700x35" tire). the Nor'wester is probably a few pounds lighter, too, although I haven't weighed the Pangea (the Nor'wester is right around 25-26 pounds with rear rack, bottle cages and small frame pump). That being said, the Pangea does have more road-bike sort of manners than MTB manners. It's fun to ride and feels faster than you think it would when you are looking at it. I'm pretty happy with it so far. They are both S&S bikes, by the way.

Probably the Thorn equivalent to the Pangea would be the Thorn Nomad Mk II. But that is a Rohloff only model, no derailleur hanger.

Was expecting you to say that the 700x28c bike would feel quite faster.
That's one of the great things about these 26" tourers, can can be a road bike with 26x1.3 tires and then a burly mbt with 26x2.1 knobbies

Have no idea if you're still looking for the Pangea (or similar). The Espresso isn't exactly in the same class of bike (different purposes), but ...

Here's a Co-Motion Espresso that I came across on CraigsList (about two weeks ago): 1997 Co-Motion Espresso Campy, 58cm, in Reynolds 853 steel - $375 (OP, KS). Located in the Kansas City area, and about the only sub-$1000 Co-Motion I can recall seeing in the past couple of years.

Might not cure your Pangea itch, but it could cure your Co-Motion itch for a "song."
