Any recommendations for clip/strap pedal set up? I don't have anything specific for the track.
So far I have ridden at the track in my street set up of clipless mountain bike pedals and shoes,
but I was advised on getting a clip/strap set up.
Road shoes + cleats? Or "track" shoes? What are the pros and cons?

Hey Ken,

The only functional difference is that some road shoes might have straps and buckles that could foul the pedals straps, or sit under these straps in an uncomfortable way, that's why trad track shoes are still lace up. That said, I've seen people using regular road shoes with traditional clips and straps with no problems.

What size are your feet? I've got some lace up Adidas shoes (like these: https://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6...6535-1,00.html) that I'm not using anymore, size 43. Alternatively, a lot of the local guys have found keirin shoes (Duegi, Tiger, etc) on Yahoo auctions cheap. You'll notice a MASSIVE increase in stability and power trasfer from your current set-up.

a little thing I found out is to use Indoor soccer shoes. they have a plate in the toe/front part right where it needs to be for bike riding and they have the same profile as biking shoes too. I have a pair of puma's that are the gretest shoes I have ever ridden in. I will be really sad when they wear out because they dont make them anymore.

edit: just saw your in japan so I dont know if you will be able to use regualar shoes

This is Japan. Some clubs actually require that you use clips and straps if you want to be a regular rider.

I ride lace up Adidas much like those in the article above for both the track and the road--They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I bought several pairs in the late '90s for about $40/pair when they were discontinued. I have had to glue the soles of each pair back on once--Gorilla glue works very well for this purpose. I am jazzed to see Adidas offering this kind of shoe again, although at an outrageous price; guess I'll just have to pony up and buy some.

As for straps, If you are doing any kind of sprint event, I recommend you use a double strap. Many find doubles useful for standing start events also.

Dave, that made a lot of sense about the buckles and straps on road shoes. Thanks for the offer for your shoes but I wear a size 11/45-46 depending on shoe. I guess I will go with the traditional lace up style. Kawasaki 23rd? Let me see how it goes...might be able to make it out.
rensho3, I felt really sketchy with the standing start so I will definitely get doubles.
