shoes

I ride on a budget(I'm cheap) and I want to know if anyone has a recommendation for cheap cycling shoes. I use toe straps so I don't want cleats.

Currently I an using a pair of lace up Dr. Scholes black rubber sole shoes. Yesterday I noticed that the barb on my pedals had torn a hole in the sole. Another pair of Chinese velcro strap shoes I have tried are way to flexable in the soles. I was looking at bowling shoes because they actually look a lot like cycling shoes. I thought about getting a pair and gluing a very stiff half sole to them.

so, what do you all recommend other that a $200 pair of cleats.

Thanks, I've just about worn out my 10 year old Montrail hiking shoes and was looking for some footwear equally suited to riding and walking. I use platform pedals, no straps (yet) and have no plans to return to toe clips and cleated shoes or clipless pedals/shoes.

Check out sites like pricepoint and steepandcheap, they might have some deals.

I have 510s for when I run platforms on my mountain bike and they're super stiff, but still easier to walk in then spd/mtb type shoes. I'm not sure what I paid for them, but I think it was around $50 on pricepoint at the time.

Actually, it looks like pricepoint has a fairly nice selection right now...

No idea how these Giro's are, but $30 doesn't seem too bad to give them a shot:
