shoes

I ride on a budget(I'm cheap) and I want to know if anyone has a recommendation for cheap cycling shoes. I use toe straps so I don't want cleats.

Currently I an using a pair of lace up Dr. Scholes black rubber sole shoes. Yesterday I noticed that the barb on my pedals had torn a hole in the sole. Another pair of Chinese velcro strap shoes I have tried are way to flexable in the soles. I was looking at bowling shoes because they actually look a lot like cycling shoes. I thought about getting a pair and gluing a very stiff half sole to them.

so, what do you all recommend other that a $200 pair of cleats.
