Dear Carleton,
I live in a hilly city and I started riding 48x18 wich is good, I can tackle flats and steep hills if I gain momentum and don't stop, but on traffic that's impossible. I started going 11pm on hilly streets to train my body and gain knowledge of what's best to do. So far in my "training" I do a full stop each block and try to go uphill as far as possible but maintaining a slow cadence.
My question is, is this kind of training effective? Should I focus more on lifting weights? Or even change the cog size?

If you are climbing hills you are going to have to lower your gearing by maybe using a 19t cog. You can also lighten your bike, but that gets expensive.

Dear Carleton,
What kind of difference in the ride did you experience between using the All City fork and the Alpina?

Which Al rims have you found most favorable as a heavy rider? I searched around and it looks like Velocities and Kinlins come up the most. THis is more for my road bike btw

I like my Velocitys on the track. But there are plenty of better options. Spoke count is important. My last road front wheel was an old Campy Shamal 20 spoke. Very deep profile. My new wheel is a Bontrager Race 10 paired spokes (20 total). I use a stock PowerTap rear.

I'm going to go with Dyads for my touring wheels. Right now I'm looking for what to do with my roadie. I crashed my rear wheel today and after truing it the spoke tension just isn't that great anymore.

Dear Carleton,
In regards to clipless shoes is being budget minded not a good idea as the product will be much much worse or can you still get a decent pair of shoes for maybe round 70? Like what shoes would you buy if you were first just looking into it?

Much, much less often than they do on road races, road criteriums, BMX, and MTB (knock wood). Even then, "crash" is often too strong of a word. Most of the time when people wind up on their backside, they are simply riding too slow and slip and slide down the track. They dust off and are back up in a few seconds.

Carleton - while we're on the topic of crashes, what was your worst crash either on the track or the street?

My worst crash was when I was a kid and somehow flipped over my handlebars of my bmx while leaving a gas station after buying candy. I think I hit a pothole.

What is the best after ride snack, in your opinion. Not talking about indulgence, more for recovery.

Dear Carleton,
I'm having trouble with my DA 7710 Bottom bracket. I'm really confused because my bottom bracket develops alot of rolling resistance when I tighten it up to spec (50Nm). When it is just hand tightened, it spins fine, but when I tighten up the drive side to spec it gets really really rough. Could there be deformation when the it is tightened down?
Any thoughts?

Ah, gotcha. But why would the plastic seals be more of a problem when tightening down the bb? Is the housing deforming a little to squeeze on the seals?
