I mostly agree, but people who are newer to long rides (such as the OP) ought to worry more about getting enough calories and electrolytes rather than maintaining/losing weight, if there's any doubt about completing the event. On brevets, I basically give myself license to eat whatever looks/smells/sounds good, and when I do, I have a better time on the ride. And I have yet to weigh more the next day than before I started.
