I searched on this topic but didn't find anything. It was a quick and lazy search, but it was a search.

Do any of you have a food dehydrator? I have inherited one and I'm looking forward to desiccating everything I can get my dirty little hands on. Anyone have some good recipes? I'd especially enjoy beef jerkey recipes.

Do any of you take dried food along with you on rides? I'm going to try bananas first, but suggestions are welcome.

I have one - bought it to try drying foods for hiking, but now that the bike bug has bit, I'm thinking about getting it out again. The only thing I tried were bananas. I sliced them kind of thick (1/4") and then put them in a bowl with a little bit of water, honey, and citric acid (sour salt) - I read that the acid and honey both help to keep them from turning brown. Then put them on the dryer overnight. They don't come out like the banana chips in the store - those are fried, not dried. These can only be described as banana raisins. Kinda chewy, but really, really good. I completely forgot that I had one. I think I'm gonna dry a couple of batches to take on a weeklong bike tour. Seems a lot easier that dealing with a fresh one on the road.

If anyone can recommend a good dehydrator, I'd consider you a friend. I used to have one for hiking, but it wasn't a good one. Chewy like DXchulo said. I could use some cheaper bike food now that the weather has turned righteous and I'm out longer.

Mine is an American Harvester that I got at Walmart. I've only used it once, and it seemed to work just fine. Before that, I was trying to use my oven, which was disasterous, so anything was an improvement. I need to start using it again.
