my sig sort of says it all. im about 185 now and i desperately want to get down to the 150-160 range for next year when the season starts back up id like to start racing. dropping 30lbs shouldnt be too hard in a year...right?

pikesfish 08-14-09 05:29 PM

Just starting to get back into riding after a lapse of several years. Hope to peel off about 25 pounds which is feasible. Currently I lift weights twice a week either arms/shoulders or chest/back and heavy legs. I ride about three days a week averaging about 16 miles per outing. I can do more but time sometimes limits my abilities. Is this feasible? Also, I find that I am often exhausted after the rides the next day and don't know if I am not eating enough. I am averaging about 1500 calories per day right now.

antiguru 08-16-09 09:18 PM

Started getting into roadie riding last year, got "serious" this season, with hopes to race next season - started at 203 / 6foot2 in june - am at 188 and climbing local mountains now, targeting 175 or so as a good "lean and mean" weight.

Biking pwns!

I got up to 210 lbs in the summer of 2008. Down to 180 this summer a year later. It was a slow, steady weight loss as I upped my mileage and followed the paleo-style diet (meat, veggies, fruit, nuts). Never felt better.

bicycletothesun 08-25-09 05:10 PM

vegetarian diet, 5'9 1/2, 171 pounds. trying to get into the 160-165 pound range.

since may 22nd when I picked up a cyclecomputer I have logged 1200 miles on my fixed gear, and 73 miles on my geared bike (purchased last week).

I'm roughly riding 15-20 miles per day.

btw, i weighed 205 pounds on Dec 31st 2008. I have since lost 30 ish pounds, I feel better and i'm really happy :D

rumrunn6 08-26-09 01:11 PM

interesting thread, what are we doing posting our current STATs and goals?

I am 5' 11 3/4" at 215 lbs
My goal is 196 lbs
I got down to 208 lbs this summer, but then started vacationing ... need I say more?

Cozzy 08-27-09 11:12 AM

I am around 5'10 weight around lb . After 7 years of not cycling, I am aiming to loss some weight with cycling and running. I am aiming for 190 by the end of the Year 2009.

Does any one have a good training program for weight loss??

paraguy 08-28-09 12:11 PM

I am 5' 8" about 2 years ago I was 220ish now I am 180ish and hoping to loose another 30 lbs for next years race season.
I have found the cycling is helping a lot but my love of food counters that.
For weight loss I find that its back to the old adage of expending more calories in a day then I use is the key to weight loss.

Just a follow up on my progress. On August 6 I entered my first post here.

Through July I kept increasing my distances, riding 50, then 70 miles in one day. Then last Sunday I rode a hair over 100 miles. It felt good and bad a the same time, but the best part was that I could still walk pretty well after it was all over.

This morning when I hit the scales I was down to 280. My primary goal is to reach 200.

Since then, I rode in an organized century ride (105 miles), did an 80 mile ride, a 57 miler, and lots of shorter ones. And for the last week or so, my weight has been hovering around 265.5 pounds, down 14.5 in the last 6 weeks. It feels like I haven't lost any weight in a long time, but I guess I have. :thumb:

SOOO, will riding off road have any merit before the almighty. Narrow is the path that leads to life-single tracks better than double?

Daspydyr 10-13-09 04:40 PM

I started the Idiot Proof Diet (find it online) July 1, 2009. I also dusted about 10 years offf my old mountain bike. I am 214 pounds, down 22 pounds, and can ride 25 miles no problem. Back in July 6-8 miles of pavement wore me out.

The positive asset of the Idiot Proof Diet is that it gives you your daily meals and also provides you with a shopping list. I almost am used to the taste of fish.

ukmtk 10-14-09 12:08 PM

I'm 5'11" in height, 32" waist.
In March I was 176 lbs - I'm now down to 149 lbs.
I just got tough with myself and wanted a 6 pack torso.
Cycled + cross trained plenty. Was careful with my diet but not overly strict.
I have the occasional chocolate bar. Have a few beers and a cake at the weekend.
During the week I try to stick to healthy food with some minor treats last thing in the evening.

Daspydyr 10-21-09 03:04 PM

Don't drink your calories, eat something satisfying. Taste and Chew your calories. I was dead ended in my "weight loss plan." Riding got things restarted. Plus my cardio system is so much better. The world should ride, everyone. Even if you ride to Dairy queen or the Buffet, RIDE!

fungirl 11-14-09 04:04 PM

Anyone else training to lose weight?

I was reading all these posts here, good to keep motivated! I see that a lot do 25-30 miles a day, but I do 10 miles (1 hour) on my mountainbike with few hills. Seems not a lot. Are most of you training on a roadbike? That will be my award, after losing my first 15 lbs! I am 5"4, 166 lbs. Im pretty good with my diet, just made myself a training schedule to get out on my bike.

Guzzi 11-25-09 05:29 PM

So I bought a scale today and for the first time since I left the army back in August last year (2008), I stood on a scale. I weighed in at 191lbs which is between 31 and 26lbs more than what I weighed coming out of the army at around 160 and 165lbs. I knew that I had gained some weight since I've been out, but this is unacceptable :notamused:

I've been trying to work out on and off since being out having neglected goals and nutritional needs and I failed miserably every time. When you're in the military you're forced to do Physical Training 5 days a week no matter. Didn't need goals then. But by God I need them now.

So, I've decided to slim back down to 160lbs and then some (Maybe 155) as a goal. I like reading all the stories in this thread, it got me motivated to buy a scale and see what damage beer and Gyros did to me.

My first step is to analyze the food I've been taking in and clean up the menu to more nutritional foods. Then make a work out plan. (I've had my eye the P90x program because it is very similar to the Physical Training I did with my squad/platoon in the army.)

I guess if I had to ask for help I would ask what those have done with nutrition with the goals of burning fat in mind. Thanks and wish me luck.

I also want to add that I have been bicycling for the past 3 weeks on my Trek 750. Just starting out I have been doing 10 miles a day. And each week the pace I've been riding seems to have naturally quickened. I'm thinking about upping the miles to 15 a day, 4 days a week and 20 to 30 miles on the weekend in a couple of weeks.

This is a great motivational thread. When ever i feel like im at a road block or down i can come to this thread and be overwhelmed with inspiration to keep moving forward on my journey to continued weight loss and having the ultimate physique. Thanks everybody.

My diet is not high in fat and sugar (I tend to avoid all that) but still, since I had a car accident in Jan 2008 with absolutely zero exercise, I gained 20 lbs. I couldn't ride the bike since I tweaked my back, neck and shoulders and had to go through physiotherapy. That's like gaining 1 lb per month over a 20 month period from Jan/2008 to Sep/2009. Meanwhile, my midsection also ballooned by 7", yuck!!!

Last September, I've had enough and with doctor's orders, got back on my road bike. Still not doing the high-mileage I used to do. I'm only riding an average of about 120km a week, but I have now lost 10 lbs since I started riding again. No change in my diet, i.e. no cutting back on anything (note: I believe my diet was fairly good to begin with.) I have also lost 4" around my waist.

So my goal is to get back to my Jan 2008 fitness level. Cycling has gotten me halfway there in 3 months, with no change in diet. Hopefully I get to my goal in the early spring, if I continue riding throughout winter. Cross-fingers.

Good news

Guys,
lost 10 pounds during the holidays. :thumb:

Did I mention it was during the holidays? I'm so excited about it...

I start biking at August 2009 after a long period of inactivity, stress, smoking etc. Quit smoking in March, gained weight of course. In August I was 225 at 5'10". Dropped to 205 at December and got hit by another stress - gained 5 pounds. I am currently at 209-210, doing about 20 KM on the rollers daily or 20 KM outside when weather permits, I usually do about 40-60km rides on weekend, but not in the Winter. I start doing weight lifting as well and feel nice and strong right now, but weight loss stopped. It seems like all extra weight is in my gut, the look that I hate the most ;) Can't wait for a Spring to increase my daily mileage.

Moved to Austin in Winter of 2007 at 204 pounds. I'm at 163 now. I'm shooting for 150 by May.

Hi friends!
Is it OK to drink water during biking?

The meals haven't been perfect but overall are pretty healthy which i think is the best way to go because if you quit fatty foods cold turkey it makes the diet harder to keep. I've lost about 8 pounds in 3 weeks and I know its mostly "water weight" but its defintly an improvement. I hope to continue all summer and hopefully lose the gut i've had my whole life. Thats my story :)

Just curious, are you trainingon a road bike or a mountainbike?

fungirl 02-22-10 01:59 PM

Anyone knows if you work out (on the mountainbike 1,5 hrs 3 to 5 times a week, once a week going for 2 hours ride appr. 25 miles) and eat a max. of 1200 calories, it could stop your weightloss? If I read about it, it could be that your body goes in starvation mode. I eat low calorie meals, healthy meals, for over three months. Lost 2 lbs in total. Now I'm trying to eat a bit more, honestly I feel better and have more energy. I have to see next week to see if there is any change in my weight. Please advise?

At the first of the year, my wife started working with a nutritionist as part of a wellness plan at work. Since I do most all of the cooking, her nutritionist modified her plan for me as well. I am now down 20+ lbs as of this morning. I feel as if I am eating a ton of food, I am alternating walking on the treadmill and riding my bike on the trainer for an hour a day, and feeling healthier each day. Most of all it will be great to go into the cycling season lighter and with some cardio base.

If I can keep up an average of around 10lb per month I will be very happy camper.
