It's great to see everyone's success stories. Congrats to everyone, and keep it up.

I'm 6' 2.5", peak weight 3-4 months ago was 214. As of right now I've dropped 19 and I'm holding steady around 195. I wanted to get to 190, but in addition to starting cycling I also started some weightlifting and I wasn't really making any progress in my strength. I think I was dropping the weight a bit fast, and not getting enough protein.

So the current goal is to hang out around 195 and focus on moving a couple more inches from my waist up to my chest! Then figure out where to go from there.

What I love about cycling is that it's both a purpose and a means to lose the weight - now that I'm 19 lbs lighter, the larger hills that originally stopped me in my tracks aren't so big anymore. Yesssss!!

I also agree with that advice, Biking is great for your legs and cardio, but not as effective for the rest of your body. To be honest, I think most of my weight-loss has come from the reduced amount/reduced fat diet and walking.

Brontide 10-11-10 01:34 PM

Quick update. Dieting/biking since April 2010 and I have lost 51 pounds. I've gone from a BMI of 32.2 to 23.9 and my bodyfat has gone from 38% to 17%. I stopped counting my miles once I passed 2000 for the year. I'm winding down the diet and shifting into maintaining my weight. Still biking 2-4 times a week and moving to longer rides with much more climbing. I've also been going to a local climbing gym and really enjoying the workout there as well.

I'm 6ft went from 215 to 205 in about two weeks with a daily commute of around 5 miles (not a lot) and a ride of about 20 every other day!

Weight loss is all about commitment. Your work will be fueled by that. Every mile ran or weight lifted that is key.

My Story

Guess I'll add in my story. Weighed 238 in Feb. of 2010. The weight was the result of too many knee and back injuries in the military leaving me unable to do the long distance running I did most of my life.

My liver was turning fatty and failing so the Dr. read me the riot act. Started eating better and walking but tore my meniscus again simply walking down a paved path. So, I went looking for a road bike to keep working out with.

Now, it's been a bit over a year and my current weight is 168 and still dropping. Curious to see where it stabilizes at.

I ride 20-30 miles daily with rides of 50-100 miles on the weekend to include around 9-10 miles of climbing at an average 8% grade.

Worried more now about building speed and endurance than weight loss so I'm playing a balancing act with the nutrition.

Dr wants me at around 164 but we'll see. I know for many years I was under 160 so I'm wondering if I can get back to there again.

5' 10" with thin build. 57 years old. Kinda let myself become a desk potato during the last coupla decades. Got my act together this last winter with mix of daily outdoor recreation (snowshoe, x-country ski, now biking), regular gym workout (bike, row + weight machines) & smarter diet. Am down 30 lbs over last few months now weighing 160 lbs. What a difference! More strength, stamina, flexibility, better balance. Starting out I was shooting for 150 lbs, but my goal has evolved to just maintaining a consistent healthy regimen. The weight will take care of itself.

265 lbs
New goal is to ride daily until the snow gets too bad to ride in. Look for an update in the fall ;)

glowrocks 08-13-11 11:23 AM

54 years old

Got my Withings WiFi body scale and Trek 7300 exactly 8 weeks ago. (Upgraded to Trek 7.5 FX 4 weeks ago :)

Starting weight was 270, peaked at 275 and today I'm at 255.

Some minor changes to diet, mostly the result of exercise.

So far, so good.

OldsCOOL 08-13-11 12:13 PM

I'm 53, 5'9 and have lost 25lbs since the end of March this year. Currently weigh 174.

JFDmedic 08-15-11 08:35 PM

I'm 28, started at 295 lbs back in April when I started dieting and riding regularly. I am done to 260 lbs.

BarracksSi 09-17-11 10:32 AM

Sept-Oct 2009: 235 lbs. April 2010, after exercising nearly every day and -- more importantly -- logging everything I ate with an iPhone app: 203.

I've been in the high 180's since this spring, thanks to persistent exercise and good eating habits, both of which are helped along greatly with my wife (whom I married in Oct 2010). We did a workout together this morning, in fact.

EnellCH 09-18-11 06:28 PM

Started riding last October (2010) at 178lbs...now down to 168 (Sept 2011). Goal is 162lbs. Not quite as fast of a drop as I would want, but it's slowly getting there (I hope) as long as i keep at it. Ride about 2x/week but do hit occasional (sometimes too many) weeks w/o riding due to work travel. Look forward to intense riding in October and early November before it gets to cold.

BionicChris 09-29-11 10:50 AM

I was always a skinny guy as a teenager, weighed 168lbs in 2009 - at that point I was diagnosed with Leukaemia though. Chemo and steroids either main you lose loads, or gain loads... for me, I gained a lot of weight and went from 168 to 235lbs in a year.

Currently dropped back down to 204, and am aiming for 180lbs by Summer 2012.

Weighed 199 yesterday and again today (Had to do it 2 days running as I thought it was wrong!)

Congrats to all of you that are working hard and seeing results!!! Way to go!

I'm 55, 5'8". Current weight is 210 down from a high of 257 last spring. I started doing weight watchers on-line, then my wife asked me one day if I wanted to dust off the old mountain bikes and go for a ride. I re-discovered how much I enjoy riding, and am now riding about 60 to 70 miles a week. Shooting for a weight of 190-195, probably still a little heavy for my height, but still much better than 250+.

MattHB 10-26-11 02:21 AM

I'm 6'6" and currently 231lbs, been on the bike for 3 weeks and watching what I'm eating for a lot longer. I started at about 240, so I've lost 9lb's so far and feeling good on it.

I seemed to have levelled out at 231 for the last 2 weeks, but I'm wondering if it's because I'm putting on muscle in my legs. They are visibly bigger than before, I'm quite surprised as to how quickly and how much!

Do you think that my plateau'd weight is just fat loss being offset my muscle? I have some body fat weighing scales and they seem to show no difference in percentage. (I'm making sure that I test under indentical circumstances).

Thanks

Matt

Unfortunately I had to take 2 weeks off exercise whilst my foot was bandaged up. Ate sensibly and dropped a pound to 198.

As you can see from that graph I have been within a stone of my current weight ALL YEAR and currently at my lowest point. Hip replacement and an infection led to weight gain sadly. I am wondering if I am getting stuck as since April I have only lost average 1lb a month??

BarracksSi 10-26-11 07:23 PM

A bit about plateau-ing over at livestrong.com -- http://www.livestrong.com/blog/blog/...aining-muscle/

I've started to believe what the writer says: "...progress halts unless they change things up and kick their programs up a notch by adding strength training and interval work.

Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/blog/blog/...#ixzz1bwOtCscb

He's talking about building strength and muscles, but his point about changing the routine and working harder certainly has helped me.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but probably not. Burn more or eat less and your long term trend will start downward again.

tcmers 11-07-11 11:29 AM

Thought I'd jump in to help keep myself accountable. I'm 50 (51 in a couple of months), 5'11", was at 209 lbs on November 1st, highest I've been in a while. Current weight is 206. I was down around 195 at the end of 2007, and it's been a gradual progression up from there. Most of that gain was due to poor eating habits, as my excersise has remained fairly consistent, although I had an off year for cycling in 2009 while I was finishing my degree. I've set my goal at 185 by the end of February, but am starting to think that 180 would be a better goal.
