Treading a trainer

I've got A Cycleops Wind Trainer and since noise level is irrelevant in my training area, I'm quite happy with it . . . except for one thing. The drum is smooth and slips easily during sprints unless you have quite a bit of tension against the tire. Seems to me that having a surface with some traction would be beneficial in preventing the slip while reducing the amount of pressure against the tire. I would think that the slight increase in friction between the two rolling surfaces (drum and tire) would be more than offset by the lower pressure against the tire, as far as tire wear is concerned. I've thought of taking the drum off and having the surface bead blasted or covering it with a replaceable surface that would provide more traction.

Thoughts or opinions?
