Rollers Query

I'm a mountain biker and I've just been given (on long term loan) a set of rollers by a roadie colleague, as I was enquiring about ways to increase my cadence rate and overall endurance.

My one concern before I jump on them and start spinning away is, will they strip the tread from an off road tyre. I've heard that they will and don't want to find out the expensive way. Do I need to go out and buy some slicks? (And if so, will I be able to get away with semi-slicks?)

Any advice or educated guesses would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

I have tried semi-slicks and... just go to slicks.
