Yup. If you want to find out what your current heart rate max is, you have to do a stress test, either guided or self-guided, but it needs to be measured while doing the sport you are targeting (i.e., while cycling, while running, while skiing, while swimming) as you'll get a different 'max' or peak depending on the sport.

Typically, running yields a higher peak than cycling or swimming (usually about a 7-10 beats per minute partition between running and cycling and 7-10 between cycling and swimming).
